Southern Rural Life

In Jefferson County, Florida where we live, to vote early one must go to the office of the Supervisor of Elections which is in Monticello, the only true town in the county. The population of Jefferson County is around 16,000 people and is not that small in area. Its borders range from Georgia to the Gulf of MEXICO.

If you locate Tallahassee up there in the armpit/panhandle of the state and go over a county, you will find Jefferson. It is the third most rural county in Florida.
All of this to say that when my vote was registered today after Glen and I early-voted, I believe I was something like the 813th person who has voted via that route since October 19 which indicates, for us, a large turnout. There was someone in each of the little privacy spaces where you fill out your ballot. I believe there were five. Or perhaps six. Either way, I finished filling my ballot out with great speed, having no need to go over all of it. I had filled out the sample ballot sent to us last week after doing my research and so there was no hesitation on my part.
I was not fucking around with this.
There are some very strong Democratic candidates in this race and I honestly think there is a possibility that at least some of them will win. Our governor's race is quite unusual in that the Democratic candidate was a Republican until a few years ago but he gets a lot of bonafides from the fact that the candidate for Lieutenant Governor who shares the ballot with him is Gwen Graham, the daughter of a very popular Democratic governor and who ran for the office herself several years ago. Not perfect but not terrible.
The Republican candidate however, is a sort of unicorn. First off, he's Trump-endorsed to the hilt. He was a member of the Tea-Party. He's as Maga-ed up as a person can be. He's held positions in Florida's law-making bodies for years. He has climbed the Leader Ladder with persistence and success. So voting against him would be a no-brainer for many folks in Florida and absolutely YES for others.
Here's the deal though- Byron Donalds is Black. If elected, he would be the first Black governor of Florida. And the conundrum is, all of us left-leaning libtards and most of the entire Black population of Florida would be filling out that little circle by his name if...he wasn't a Republican, Donald Trump endorsed, Maga Cultist.
It's all just odd. Did the Magas think that liberals and people of color would vote for him despite his political leanings just in order to finally and at last, get a governor who didn't look like a, well, southern politician?
Despite my great desire to see a Black governor at Florida's helm, Byron Donalds (can you even believe that last name? Can we say Donald's?) ain't the person.
And here's another thing- will the white Maga voters who have, practically by definition, racist leanings, vote for a Black man?
I am quite curious to see how this turns out.

After all of that, it's time for me to make our supper. I made another loaf of the high protein, high fiber bread and it's in the oven as we speak. I'm going to make clam spaghetti and a salad with lots of arugula and basil in it. And in some excellent news, we have heat.
I sort of want to adopt the technician who has taken care of us. He just spent over three hours working on our unit and was good-natured though-out  it all.
"I'm gonna get y'all heat if I have to stay here until 3:00 a.m.," he said.
I believed him.
Glen seems to like him fine too. He's out there now, giving him some ducks to take home and cook.
John said that duck fajitas will be on the menu.
Oh Lord. Men.

I asked him if I could possibly take his picture for my blog and he said that would be fine. So here it is.

I showed it to him and asked if that was okay. He said it was.
I bet his mama is proud of him. And his daddy too. He has that confidence and ease that people who grew up good seem to have.
I'm glad for him.
And I'm glad we have heat.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Donalds is a MAGAT to the core, any person of color that knows what he stands for would vote for anyone other than him. Duck fajitas? I don't know........

  2. Oh Florida! What a zoo! Politically that is. Yay for you all voting! I never knew the 2 Jefferson County details you mentioned, that it's so big, and there are less people in it than my new home town of Durango CO. Glad you found John and you all will stay warm now! Oh, that sounded strange...you all have heat now!

  3. I am so glad you have heat and from such a nice technician too. I am also glad you voted already and truly hope that all of the traditional non-voters who can't be bothered, also get off their couches and vote. So Tallahasee is the state capital?

  4. Well, I am well smitten with John for being such a fine and dedicated person. As I am with our serviceman Randy who turned up to fill our propane tank and then re-light/test all the pilot lights so we don't blow the damn place up. We then had a long discussion about his 32 year old daughter who happens to be a tug-boat captain on the coast of Maine. It takes my breath away. Just when I despair of all the hubris and crappola in the world, I fall in love with humanity again. For today, I can thank John and Randy for that.

  6. I agree that John restores one's faith in humanity and regards the voting. I voted by mail just as soon as that paper hit my hand and I got the notice that it has been counted. I hope it does count. All in all a good day for you.

I love the way your mind works.

  8. I am glad that you have heat too! And I loved how you wrote the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of MEXICO. I heard him ramble on the other day about renaming one of the oceans Trump Ocean. One can't make this stuff up. I love geography and the county where you live does seem quite rural. The county where I live has well over 300,000 people. We live in vastly different areas. I did read about the gubernatorial election in Florida and that the GOP candidate was a MAGA and also black. It should be quite interesting to see how that election turns out. Ron DeSantis would not be a governor I would like if I lived in Florida.

  9. I like the expression "Maga-ed up". It makes Maga sound like a mind numbing cocktail and if you drink too much of it you get Maga-ed up, losing the power of independent thought and moral decency. Looking across the great ocean, I am worried that The Fake President and his minions will do something terrible to disrupt or annul the mid-term elections. Yeah - I believe that orange fatboy has got something noxious up his sleeve.

  10. Thanks for the map; Tallahassee is not at all where I thought it was - my Florida experience is limited to flying out of Miami and December drives down to visit grandparents there. And I guess Jefferson County/Monticello indicates an admirer of old Tom Jefferson somewhere in the past. Such a complicated person he was. ANYWAY glad you have heat - we haven't turned ours on yet and there are many windows open due to a more protracted than usual painting project.

  11. More and more I think Congress should be full of technicians and home contractors. Nice people, do what they said they would, don't stop till it's finished. I just had a similarly happy experience with home reno.

  12. John is a gem! You' ll have to keep his contact info on hand for future work. I'd hire him in a heartbeat.
FL voting is a real crap shoot. It will be fascinating to see how this unfolds.
MA residents typically vote Democratic and there are not many MAGA living here. I've voted already too.

  14. A talented technician is a treasure for sure. Glad you voted and I can't wait for results in November. I'm afraid to be hopeful.

  15. I've never had duck, or squab (they're baby pigeons, I didn't know), or any other wild meat, except venison once, not a fan. How did Glen get dead ducks home? Lots of ice? Just curious. And what did the border patrol guys have to say about the ducks? So many questions:)
Glad you have heat again, makes life so much more bearable. We have snow this morning and it's coming down hard but it's melting as it lands thank goodness. Jack was not impressed with the snow this morning.
I hope the elections go well, and by well, I hope that the democrats trounce trump and his minions.

  16. Hello there again... nice to read your bog again. Who would have known that Florida is divided into so many small administrative areas - I guess it make sense of a sort. Which is more than can be said for politics today, as your post attests. It is much the same in the UK and much of Europe really. I try not to think about it too much.

  17. Give me a man with a tool belt. So much more attractive than a suit and tie. And working hands, a little calloused. Hubba hubba.
Mary, I thought that mermaid was Magnolia!

  18. Yay for the heat! Yeah, I voted for Jolly and against Donalds too. As you said, as much as I'd love to see a black governor, he's not the one.

I never realized that Jefferson is the easternmost county that goes from Georgia to the Gulf. I'd also completely forgotten about Calhoun and Liberty counties. I really do not know the panhandle at all.
