It seems to me that my mean old sweet girl has been feeling a little better today. This morning she was still in the cradle but after I'd been up for about an hour, I lifted her out and took her outside and she went through her ablutions and walked back to the steps and spent some time looking around. When she came onto the porch, I took her into the kitchen and showed her the Temptations lickable treat she had not eaten last night and she, at first slowly, and then more enthusiastically, did indeed lick it all up. She appeared to be heading back to the cradle but instead, went back outside where she stayed for a little while before she went back to bed.
Later on in the afternoon, I checked on her and she was on the steps to the laundry room where she likes to hang out in the sun. I'd gone to GDDG and bought her some different wet treats and food and I opened one of those up and she ate about half of it. I was so pleased. She is not interested in water though. I keep bringing her fresh water but she ignores it.
So it's felt like she has been doing better and I am so grateful for that but even as I say that, I have no idea where she is right now. She's not out back, she's not in the cradle, she's not on our bed, she's not in the Glen Den, she's not in the library, nor is she here on the back porch with me.
And of course the thought crosses my mind that she's gone off to be alone as cats sometimes do, as indeed our Jack did not that long ago when he was sick with kidney failure. And I hate that thought. She's probably right here in the house somewhere, just cozied up in a different place, perhaps hoping I'll leave her alone.
I don't know. And that's the hard part. I do not know.
It's been a strange day for me overall. Lon and Lis are playing tonight in Tallahassee and I have been planning on going all week, knowing that yes, it would be very hard for me to go but that I would be so glad I did and all day long I've been incredibly anxious about that and sad that I am at this place in my life and ashamed that I can't do the simplest thing which is to go see my dearest friends play their beautiful music in a place where I know I'd see the sweetest people, because Lis and Lon's fans just ARE the sweetest people and the best people, people I haven't seen in years for the most part and I am actually good in situations like that, I really am. I can socialize well and truly.
It is just the making myself do it that seems impossible. And I beat myself up because I can't seem to force myself to do something that would make me happy. I am, as I said, ashamed.
Lis has told me it's all right. She understands. She knows. She gets it.
And yet. What in hell is wrong with me?
So I've felt almost paralyzed all day, each and every thing I've done, no matter how insignificant, has seemed overwhelming and monumental, up to and including feeding the crows.
Which is nothing, nothing, nothing at all.
Not the best of days.
After the game and he had taken Maggie home, he went to see Alan and he's not back yet. I am waiting to hear what's going on. Yesterday Alan began breathing on his own with good oxygen levels, normal blood pressure, normal temperature, had his eyes open and he appeared to be following movement. And this was two or three days after the doctor told Cathy to gather the family because it was looking like it was time.
So I am quite interested to hear what today has brought.
Here's a thing that has brought great tenderness to my heart today- tomorrow is the 42nd anniversary of Glen's and my marriage.
Forty-two years. And that time has passed in the blink of an eye, in a finger snap, in the time it takes to fill a glass with sweet, cold water and drink it down when the day is hot and the work has been hard.
I think of how young we were, even at the age of thirty. How much trust and faith we both had to have that we could make this work. He, knowing at least a little bit of how badly I was damaged and had been hurt and how very, very little trust I had in any man. Me, that woman, who had made so many bad choices when it came to men because of the hurt and the damage.
And yet, here we are.
He always says, "I told you."
And me knowing that even as I said "I do," I didn't really believe him.
Tomorrow we will celebrate quietly and privately and perhaps the Waffle House will be involved. As I said to him today, "The more I love you, the less I need any sort of present from you."
And it's true. He is the gift.
I think I have finally and at last reached a point where I believe in his love and could not ask for one more thing.
Except more. Please. More of this.
***************
Alan is back on assisted breathing.
I look up. Thank you, Ross.
Love...Ms. Moon
P.S. Glen just came to report that he heard the sound of a cat trotting across the kitchen floor and discovered Maurice, eating her DRY FOOD!
Hallelujah.
I think this cat might just might make it.

Not the news we were wanting on either the Maurice or Alan front. Thinking of you. Hopefully Maurice has just found a new spot to hang out in but her behaviour does suggest otherwise.
ReplyDeleteToo much sadness. Don't be too hard on yourself.
She keeps sneaking off but the she comes back so maybe she has another hiding place to be cozy in.
DeleteHappy Anniversary. I hope you find Maurice, will you walk around your yard and look in every possible hiding place? Since he ate the treats you offered he might not be ready to give up just yet, and could just be hiding to heal in peace. Can you leave bowls of water in a few places? Good news about Alan, but now he is back on assisted breathing?
ReplyDeleteThere would be no way to look in every available hiding place, dear River! Sheds, old chicken house, trees, jungly parts of the yard, woods...
DeleteBut yes we would have taken the flashlight out and looked for her and called her.
She has water in the same place where she has food and she's finding that just fine so...
Alan seems to go back and forth with of this.
Happy anniversary. So many concerns, about Alan and Maurice and what might happen next to either of them. Hoping for a good outcome, no matter what it is.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ms. L.
DeleteAnd you are so right- we do not always know how a good outcome should be defined. If suffering is involved...well.
yes, you will be hard on yourself...but please give yourself a rest. Too much to deal with. Glad Maurice is doing better today. And Alan- sadly it sounds as if things are tenuous. Your post made me cry buckets...that is what kind of day I'm having..but want to wish you and Mr Moon a Happy Anniversary. It is cause to step back and embrace all you have lived through...good, bad and all in between- in those years. I will lift my glass to both of you! When I think on the 45 years I had with Buzz..it boggles my mind. I miss him so, but I celebrate and rejoice that time, as you do with your *time*
ReplyDeleteSusan M
I can't imagine what it's been like for you after having lost a partner of 45 years. I admire you for keeping on keeping on.
DeleteHappy Anniversary! 42 years is a lovely milestone.
ReplyDeleteSometimes when illness strikes, it is out of our hands. There are no guarantees and that makes everything harder. Take care MM.
Susan
So often when illness strikes it is out of our hands. Doctors practice medicine. They don't always have the answers, do they?
DeleteHappy Anniversary and I hope both Alan and Maurice recover.
ReplyDeleteThat would be so sweet.
DeleteOh bless her little kitty heart!! Orange kitties are something else. My first one, Brandy, was given to my daughter when she was two years old. We had taught her how to pick up a baby kitten, and how to hold him without hurting him and the two of them grew up together. He died at 20 years old, and she mourned him like a brother. Orange cats do that to people. So, it looks like you have a few more years to enjoy your beautiful orange companion. I hope Glen will be able to enjoy his companion/friend again, too. Old friends are not to be taken lightly. They are so much a part of who we are.
ReplyDeleteTwenty years is a very, very long life for a cat! I'm sure your daughter did indeed feel as if she had lost a brother. A lifetime companion, at her age, anyway.
DeleteI think I would be more than a bit lost without Maurice. I know Glen feels more than a little lost without Alan already.
Happy anniversary - it's wonderful to take an extra moment to appreciate such a wonderful marriage! I do think that everything going on, especially the roller coasters around Mr. M's friend and dear Maurice, has to be terribly draining and stressful for you; it's no wonder you feel overwhelmed. I find that my emotional capacity gets tapped out more and more easily with age and health things, too.
ReplyDeleteCeci
I think as we get older, we become less absorbent when it comes to things that affect us deeply. Our walls are not as strong. At least it feels that way for me.
DeleteHappy anniversary Mary and Glen! I’m so relieved about Maurice. I hope both she and Alan recover. It must be torture for poor Cathy.
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
Cathy is truly strong and I believe she feels pretty sure that Alan will be back as he was before. I would love to think she is right. And who knows? She may be.
DeleteA fabulous love between two people for so long and so much that you've shared....I can only imagine what a wonderful life you've both had together...that's because I'm more comfortable alone...so I salute the twosome of you all. That's great that Alan came out of his stupor for a while...even if it was just the one time. I send virtual cat healing to Maurice also, because she such a sweet biting warm kitty.
ReplyDeleteWell, as you know, I love being alone too but Glen and I have tumbled about together so many years that our edges are smooth and we are pretty easy to life with when it comes to each other.
DeleteAlan did not regain consciousness as such. He just had his eyes opened and appeared to be following movement.
Thanks for the virtual cat healing. Maurice can use it.
I always put a lil water in our wet cat food and then mix it up to make sure both girls stay hydrated.
ReplyDeleteI think I have been reading and sharing with you for almost 20 years now.... 17 years ago today on a different couch Tony asked me to marry him and I don't think I would have had the courage to say yes had you not so poignantly shared your own journey here so thank you for being a guide to me in my own recovery and happy anniversary to you and your dear husband.
thinking of you both as you wait for the news that may be forthcoming with Mr moon's friend. it's always too soon to say goodbye. xxalainaxx
I have hardly ever given Maurice wet cat food. I did for awhile and then she quit eating it so I quit buying it. But she's getting the good stuff now. Excellent idea to add water.
DeleteI have to tell you that what you said about having the courage to say yes to Tony absolutely made me cry. Damn, woman! I do not deserve any thanks for that except to say that perhaps I showed you it is possible. It is possible for us to love and be loved, no matter what. If, of course, it is the right person and I think you and I have both found our right persons.
Thank you.
I was so glad to see the photo of Maurice tonight. Glad for the update on that cute lil girl. Do you feed her out of a crystal bowl (in the photo)?
ReplyDeleteFriends who understand us and our reasons are priceless. Lin and Lis seem like those people to you. It’s not complicated.
Happy Anniversary tomorrow to you two lovebirds! So sweet. Enjoy finally knowing that you’re completely safe and loved.
-Nicol
Oh, that's not a real crystal bowl. It's an imitation cut glass, I guess. I got it at some thrift store. You know me and bowls.
DeleteLon and Lis definitely are those priceless people. There is no doubt.
Glen and I have had a sweet and loving day.

DeleteI hope things continue to look up for both Maurice and Alan. Enjoy your anniversary tomorrow -- you wrote so lyrically about your marriage, it was a pleasure to read! And may I just say . . . yes, WAFFLES!
ReplyDeleteMy marriage is, as I keep saying, one of the main miracles of my life. Who knew I could learn to be loved and to love the way I have? Glen's a pretty amazing guy.
DeleteWould you believe I've never had a waffle at the Waffle House? I always get the raisin toast with apple butter!
There have been good vibes coming from France, Germany and Switzerland, after I lifted that picture of Maurice in the dolly bed from your blog and posted it in my WA cat group. We're all continuing to send them over.
ReplyDeleteBest a
Anne- that made me smile so big. I had to tell Glen about all these cat people sending good vibes to our biting kitty. Thank you so much.
DeleteSounds positive with Maurice hopefully she’s turned the corner. Will continue to root for her over this side of the pond. Love and purrs Willy Wombat Dorset Uk
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you, Willy Wombat, in Dorset in the UK! I feel like Maurice is a famous cat now, insane as she is.
DeleteMaurice will be back to biting you in no time! Waffles sound like the best anniversary!
ReplyDeleteShe hasn't bitten me in days. I'm almost looking forward to her returning to health enough to return to her evil ways.
DeleteBreakfast this morning was a saga.
Hopefully Maurice has turned a corner and will be feisty as ever.Do you pronounce her name Morris or Maureece? Cats put you through a lot. Last night after midnight I was wandering the garden in my bare feet calling my cat because my husband said he had heard cats fighting and Pi is such fraidy cat. I'm sure the neighbours were saying "There's that mad old cat lady again"
ReplyDeleteHave a fun anniversary!! Wendy SA
Maureece. When she showed up, I though she was a male because most orange cats are. It wasn't until I took her to be neutered that I learned that no, she could not be neutered, she would have to be spayed.
DeleteOoh boy.
Yes! That mad old cat lady! In my neighborhood, there is a real and true mad cat lady so my behavior is not seen as so strange. Now, as to feeding the crows...
Happy Anniversary Glen and Mary!! How wonderful! I see that it's also Yorkshire and Mrs. Pudding's anniversary this weekend...45 years for them.
ReplyDeleteI'm super happy to hear about Maurice. As for Mr. Moon's friend....it always gives me pause when someone close to death has a sudden radical improvement. It oftentimes means the end is near. I hope it doesn't sound insensitive to say so. Of course, I hope it's a true turnaround and that it "sticks".
I know! I must have known how close our anniversaries are but I forget every year.
DeleteEvery year.
It does not sound insensitive for you to say what you said. I have had the same thoughts. I've also wondered if that rally happens if the patient is unconscious.
Good news Maurice seems to have her appetite back. It's possible she ate something that was spoiled or didn't sit well. Could have been the shot but it seems to me that if it was a bug of some sort one shot wouldn't do it.
ReplyDeletePerhaps that was Alan's last moment of clarity before the end.
I think Maurice would have been vomiting if she'd eaten something bad. I believe she wasn't eating just because she was sick.
DeleteThe vet told us that shot's effects will last for a few weeks!
Happy Anniversary, Mary and Mr. Moon! xoxo
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that Maurice is improving.
Thank you, Ellen.
DeleteI'm so glad to hear the hopeful news about Maurice! Just in time for your anniversary. Now there's a good gift. I hope as Alan becomes stronger we'll see more good news from him, too.
ReplyDeleteAs for Lis, she knows you. She understands.
I am not sure that Maurice is completely out of the woods yet but she is eating and that is good. And she comes and go's a little to and from the outside and that's good too.
DeleteWe shall see about Alan.
Lis does understand. You're right.
Happy anniversary wishes winging their way to you and Mr Moon, Hopefully Maurice will continue to improve - fingers crossed. Lynda UK
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lynda UK!
DeleteYes. Fingers crossed for our crazy little orange cat.
Happy Anniversary to you and the Mr, Sister Moon. Sending love to you both and healing vibes to Maurice. x0x0 N2
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love being called Sister Moon.
