Just...What?

It has been a crazy day. Not right here in Lloyd. Things here have been pretty normal but the news coming in has been somewhat overwhelming.
First off, A. is being transported back to Tallahassee because Shands has done everything they can do and there's nothing that can't be handled right here at home in the hospital where he originally was. First though, they have to wait until he's recovered from a surgery they did today to deal with an infection...
Y'all. You don't need to know all of this. Just trust me- nothing about this entire situation is normal. There are only about 8-11 cases of this particular virus reported in the US a year.
So that's what's happening there.

In other who-in-the-fucking-world-would-believe-this-news, my ex-husband (the father of Hank and May) and his wife were in a pileup on a bridge in South Carolina this morning that involved around fifty cars. This was such an usual event that it's been reported in the New York Times. The ex and his wife were in their Subaru and although they were hit by a log truck, they were unharmed as was their cat, Evie. But the car was totaled and they had to walk off the bridge, get a ride to the nearest town with a kind local, and are now in a motel, waiting to be able to get access to their car in order to collect their stuff, put it in a rental car, and get home. They were on their way back from Vermont where they spend their summers.
One of those unluckiest/luckiest days of your life situations.

I've been responding to the in-coming about all of this today and I managed to get a little more weeding in the bed beside the kitchen done. I made a gumbo which I'll have a bowl of tonight and then tomorrow Glen and I will have the leftovers which will be even better then. I made a loaf of my high protein and fiber bread and alas, is is not looking that spectacular.
La-di-dah. It will be fine to go with the gumbo.
We've gotten a little rain which is so comforting.

I think the coolest and happiest thing that happened today is that August got his ears pierced. He's been wanting to do this for a long time and finally got his parents to agree to him getting it done for his eleventh birthday.

Can you see it? He has an identical one in his other ear. Levon is so jealous. That boy loves jewelry. His time will come.

But as Hank said about August on our group text, now August is a pirate. And that's pretty synchronistic with the song that's been playing in my head today. I came across a video of the band The Killers doing a cover of Jimmy Buffet's "A Pirate Looks At Forty" and I was so taken by it that I watched the whole thing.
Here it is if you're interested. If you're not, that is completely okay.

A week from today I'll be on St. George Island with my nursing school forever and ever ladies. I'm having a hard time actually believing that. But it's true.
Good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. August is growing like a weed. I love his earrings. Now he needs gold hoops and he needs to learn to say aarrrrrrr a lot:)
What's a pirate's favorite letter? R, but he's awfully fond of the C as well.
What does a pirate charge for corn? A buck an ear.
    I'll stop.

I guess it will be much easier for everyone to have Glen's friend back in Tallahassee. It's random and devastating.

I just took another look at that first photo of Maurice. I have the exact same tablecloth. What are the odds? I love the birds on it.

    1. Woman- have you ever considered a new career in doing stand-up. You could do it for kids' birthday parties. And why DON'T they have comedians for kids? This could be a million buck idea.
Well, A.'s not coming back any time real soon. Surgeries. Intestinal things.
I can't remember whether I bought this tablecloth new or if I thrifted it. But I've had it a very long time. That's so funny you have one too!

  2. Very sad about A. I didn't listen to the whole song, it's not for me. You are going to have a great time on St George Island, just like you always do.
Your ex and his wife were very lucky and I hope by now they have their things out of that car and are on their way home.

    1. That pileup on the bridge was on our TV news, they showed the long lines of cars and a walmart truck almost bent in half.

    2. I wonder if you'd like a version of the song done by Buffett?
I know I'll have a good time on the island but you know how anxious I get before these things. This time is no exception, no matter how logically I talk to myself.
I think everyone in that wreck was lucky. Well, except for the one fatality. Still, when you look at pictures and the footage, it's just horrible.

  3. Oh my, I'm so glad your ex and his wife weren't hurt! A 50+ car pile up and they're ok!!! I hope others were as lucky!

  4. Cool August the Pirate! And he even got a lollipop!
So sorry about A. There’s no praising the lord for that.
Oh, that song. I’d never heard it. Powerful poetry.

    1. Pirates love lollipops, don't you know? And you're a pirate too, Mitchell! I am hoping with all my heart that August wants two hoops. I just love that so much.
It is so hard for me to imagine that you've never heard that song. I thought it was one of those songs that's just in the Zeitgeist and everyone knew it. Buffett had a huge gift for self-effacing poetry that made you laugh.

  5. I actually saw somewhere yesterday news of that pileup in SC. I guess it is a testament to the safety of Subarus that your ex and his wife weren't injured.
August looks so cute with that lollipop in his mouth.

I listened to the video. I really liked that song. I had not heard it before.

    1. There was only one fatality from that entire pileup! Really hard to believe. August does look cute with a lollipop in his mouth. He's a cute boy when he forgets not to smile.
See what I said to Mitchell above about not ever having heard that song. How can that be?

  6. We were just reading about that massive pileup on I-95. It's almost unbelievable that no one was killed (although I did read that one person was airlifted to the hospital; I hope they're okay). I think the biggest factor in the accident was heavy fog. It's just terrible. I'm glad your ex and his wife and the cat are okay.

August is a really cool guy!

    1. One fatality. Yes. Very dense fog. The ex and his wife and Evie the Cat are either on their way home or are already here.
August has a type of cool that few others can achieve.

  7. I am still in shock. What in the what was yesterday?? Times are feeling odd. I told Habk yesterday that I know a lot of these feelings are probably human brain limitations and biases but it still feels eerie how close together these happenings are. Between A, Jerry and Lucia, my uncle, also our cat Jasper was acting really sick (he seems ok now, but I was scared for a day, two days ago), and then all the media coverage of the Cornell case and people sharing their opinions triggering my feelings of an all too similar story...I sort of feel like I am in a time warp. It's a doozy.

August and his new shiny ears made my day yesterday. Levon will be the most jealous boy for two whole years I imagine. Two more places for bling!

    With love

    2. It didn't even occur to me that you spelled Hank wrong! The brain interpreted it all on its own.
I hear you on the time warp thing. The whole Cornell situation has me sort of disassociating. I guess that's what it is. I simply cannot take it in. I want it to be not true so bad. I know it's triggering you and a million other women and that's the pure evil sin of it.
I hope Levon doesn't try to pierce his own ears. I can just see that kid doing it. He's Mr. Get'Er Done for sure.

  8. Way to go, August! Pierced ears are GREAT! I had my ears pierced the summer I turned 13. Back in those old timey days, pierced ears weren't in style yet. It's the only time in my life that I was ahead of the fashion curve, LOLI had to endure a lot of comments from adults saying "What are going to do next? Get a bone through your nose?" Oh, such trenchant wit.

    1. "Oh such trenchant wit." You definitely made me laugh with that one. Yeah, I think you and I are of sort of similar age? Anyway, it wasn't really done among a certain (self-perceived) upper class when I did it, either. Supposedly only prostitutes had pierced ears. My parents forced me to go to our GP to get mine done. I was sixteen.

  9. Glad your ex and his wife are okay. What a scary and complicated situation for them. It's good that Glen's friend is being moved closer.
My college roommate pierced my ears with a needle and a potato. I haven't worn earrings for years and years as they made my ears itch so I gave up.

    1. It is good that A. will be coming back here but that's not going to happen until he is more recovered from a surgery he had to have. This is never-ending.
I remember the needle and potato situation. That's the way a lot of girls did it.
You must have a metal allergy. I've known people who couldn't wear pierced earrings for that reason.

  10. Why does August getting his ears pierced not surprise me? That boy is a gem. My parents wouldn't let me get my ears pierced until I was about 15 or 16. They thought it was trashy or low class. Clip on earring that pinch were fine but a hole in the earlobe? They also didn't let me wear ankle bracelets for the same reason.

I'm glad Hank's and May's dad and stepmom are uninjured but what a bunch of shit to have to deal with. Are Hank and May close to their dad?

    1. It was only prostitutes who had pierced ears when we were young. Supposedly. Hell, my grandfather thought that only prostitutes had painted finger or toenails. So yeah, I know what you mean. I don't think I even knew what an ankle bracelet was until I was older.
Yes. Hank and May have a very good relationship with the "otro" parents as my friend Lynn used to call them. And Glen and I have a very civil relationship with them. Hell, I was married to the guy and although I still carry a lot of resentment, we shared a lot of stuff and we made two wonderful kids.

  11. A 50-car pile-up is horrendous. Do they know the cause? Hopefully everyone walks away.
I find that many boys like the idea of an earing, get the piercing and wear the earing(s) for 6 months to a year and then decide they are no longer desirable. That's what happened with my son and his friends.
I hope A's wishes are being adhered to.
When my Uncle was hospitalized with a cancer diagnosis at age 99, the recommendation was surgery, chemo and rehab. My Uncle said "No." He wanted to die in his own home and that is exactly what happened after 6+ months of pain-free care.

    1. Yes. Owen had pierced ears when he was younger but I think they've grown back. I believe Gibson got his pierced too. Maggie just got hers done a few months ago.
Oh! The cause of the pileup was very, very dense fog. Like zero visibility, I guess.
I don't think A. had set down his wishes on paper or even told them to anyone and therein lies a big problem.

  12. GEEZ I am so glad that you divorced that Dad of some of your children- You could have been in that pile up...so , Whew, timing is everything...
Love photo of hell cat on the table. Looks like she wants a cuddle , but- just- don't.
Of course August has the coolest parents on the planet. I am hoping that he does not start gauging his ear holes. They tend to get caught in stuff and it hurts. The trend may be passe by now.
    Love ya!

    1. Well, I wouldn't have been in that car because they were on their way back from Vermont where they spend their summers, as I said, and that property belonged to the wife's family. Isn't it odd though that out of all the people on the roads in that area that morning, two people that I know quite well were right there at the wrong time.
Gauging is something I just never got but I certainly respect those who did it/do it. I saw a younger woman the other day with gauged ears. I can't even remember where so I guess I wasn't too shocked.
