I Am Not Lonely Yet

You may notice that I changed my header picture. The photo of my house that has been up there was just too dark and made it look as if it was haunted which I'm pretty sure it's not. I think I'd know after all these years here.
Linda Sue of Lady Margaret's Curlers made that excellent and beautiful mermaid cherub ornament and sent it to me some years ago. The child reminds me so much of Magnolia June when she was younger and there is never a time when I look at it that I am not pleased and simply delighted all over again. It's been hanging in that window in the laundry room the whole time I've had it which is perfect for me because I walk by it many, many times a day.

This little Mexican paper mache dancer or circus performer or perhaps something entirely different has now come to roost among the plants I have on that table in front of the window. This is the folding table Glen built me several years ago and it's one of my favorite spots in the house. The beautiful bark cloth the plants and lady are resting on was also sent to me by Linda Sue.
That sweet lady artist is represented all over this house.

Today? Well. Let's see. It was cold when I woke up. Maurice and I did not want to get out of bed. Of course what I call cold is barely even mild in the more northern climes. But it was in the low fifties and that, to us, is pretty darn chilly. So I just kept burrowing under my covers until finally Maurice came up to my head to see if I was still breathing and when she found I was, she jumped off the bed and went to attend to whatever it is she attends to when she gets up and in a few minutes, I got up too. It was a two cashmere sweater day and one of those sweaters came to me from...Linda Sue.
I set the thermostat to 68 degrees to warm the place up a little and then forgot about it until later when I realized I had not heard the heat come on and when I went to check it I saw that it had not come on and it was 66 degrees in the hallway where the thermostat lives and so I did what I do which is to stare at the thermostat for awhile, hoping that my mere presence and force of mind will fix whatever's wrong with it and I fiddled with the temperature again and neither of those things worked.
They never do but a woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do.
I knew I wasn't going to freeze and so dismissed the whole thing until later when I realized I'd been cold all morning. I plugged in a space heater and guess what?
It isn't working.
Of course.
Still, not to worry, right?
I went out to the garden just to look around and be depressed about my greens and pick some more tabasco peppers because those and basil and one more Seminole squash are the only things I've got going. Well, except for arugula. That's still doing pretty well.
And then I had a moment.
Maurice came out to the garden too and she had a sip from the shallow dish I have out there to catch water for the bees and I saw the other orange cat by the compost pile, probably looking for anything new which I might have put out there which he would like to eat and he saw me looking at him and he froze and Maurice froze. I don't know whether she saw him or not. And I seemed to be caught in whatever space/time event they were in and we all just stood there in the sun for at least three or four minutes, simply being still and being surrounded by the intense color that fall somehow brings with it, as if a new filter had been added to everything. It was so quiet. I listened for birdsong and did not hear any. I held my basket with the few peppers in it I'd picked and was still.
It was odd and yet, it seemed to be exactly what we all needed to do. I swear I could feel the three points of energy the three of us were emitting coming together and I am not a casual user of language like that.
And then I took my eyes off of the other orange cat and when I looked back a second later, he had disappeared and I realized Maurice had too. And so the spell was broken but for those moments, it had felt very natural and a little powerful too. Not that we had the power but that together, there was some sort of force.
It wasn't what I would call a spiritual experience and I didn't gain any enlightenment from it but it was something.

And interesting. And peaceful in a way but also, not exactly peaceful.

Again. This is not really me but I know what I feel and that's what I felt.

Perhaps this is what happens when you go for three straight days without seeing anyone or speaking to anyone, being alone and not unhappy about it.

Later on this afternoon I did something I've been wanting to do for at least a week, which was to get out my clay and the few very, very simple tools I use to try and recreate my crow on magnolia leaves.

I picked three smallish leaves and used those as templates. I have everything I need here for this stage of building something from clay. Parchment paper, a rolling pin, an old small kitchen knife, plastic wrap, small bowls for water and to make slip in. Slip being the sort of glue made from clay and water you use to attach pieces together, theoretically. And this is what I did.

I believe I was more mindful working here at home on the back porch.
No time constraints, no worries about other people seeing and possibly judging what I'm doing although I will say I don't feel judged in pottery class. Still, if no one else is around, there is no chance whatsoever that any sort of criticism, silent though it may be, is possible.
I fooled around with making my bird and I have not found my way with that at all. I was texting a friend about that and she said that the whole thing about crows is their personality. I agreed with her but added that the figure should at least resemble a bird.
This is all entirely new to me. I have never, ever thought of myself as anyone who could make a ceramic bird or hibiscus or fish, for that matter. But I find so much pleasure in trying.

**************

Mr. Moon is leaving Canada probably as we speak and will start the 2,400 mile drive home tomorrow.
Hoo-boy.
I wasn't going to bother him with the whole heater situation but when I looked at the forecast for this coming week, I decided that it would be okay to mention it in hopes that he would either have some suggestions about how to rectify the situation or at least get in touch with whoever it is that does our heat and air care to see if he could schedule a visit from them.

I'm sorry for being a wimp but 47 degrees?
That's cold. Real cold. For me.
When Jessie and I were shopping at TJ Maxx last week we came across a pair of leggings lined with some sort of fleecy, furry substance that was so soft it could not possibly have come from nature. I swooned a little and Jessie said, "Buy them!"
"Oh, I don't need them," I said.
Haha.
I wish I'd listened to my child.

Anyway, I'll be fine and the heater will be fixed at some point and Mr. Moon will be home soon enough. And now I'm going to go heat up my supper. Last night's crispy tofu along with the eggplant casserole made me incredibly happy. This tofu recipe is brilliant and if any of y'all are really interested, I'll pass it on.
So tonight I'm having some of that along with the eggplant casserole warmed up and I've also cooked a small pot of pinto beans because I wanted them.
I may or may not bake some blueberry corn muffins. Having the oven on might warm up this end of the house a little bit, at least.

I just finished listening to this today.

Again, it was not great literature but I surely did enjoy it. Where it could have been precious and smarmy and cliched it wasn't. There was just enough perfectly placed profanity as well as some tragedies and realities of life and lessons hard learned to keep it from slipping into the space of wondering why in the world you're wasting your time reading this.
Also there's an orange cat who is a death doula.
I think I'll remember this one for awhile and that's saying something.

So. There's that.

I have gotten The Duck out of its summer storage, which is to say a plastic garbage bag, and put it on the bed. All will be well. And Maurice will be pleased.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. That cherub looks exactly like your cute grand daughter. In fact, I thought it was a doctored photo you put into the ornament.

Your moment with Maurice and the other cat sounded intense. But it was funny curious Maurice also froze. Who knows what was going on between the three of you.

Your leaves are off to a great start and that sounds really pleasant how you went about it today.

    Time for the parka!

  2. I love the leaves that you have made at home in your own world. It is a better way to work on art I reckon. I freeze if anyone is watching me do artsy things. I love that you still have the little Maggie mermaid in a shell ,on your window. I feel honored! So nice to know that you have not sent all of the questionable things to charity somewhere. I love that
    ! thank you!
Do you need a hot water bottle, I have three! of course it can not get there overnight or even during this week. Hot water bottles are lovely for warming up a cold bed!

No. I don't need a hot water bottle but thank-you. I may actually have one here somewhere that a friend sent me, still in the box. This was from decades ago. I just snuggle under my comforter and I'm plenty warm. Maurice helps.

  3. Blueberry muffins!! I want some. I have the blueberries (frozen from earlier this summer) but the muffin tins are packed away in the storage
pod. I may have to go to Costco and get a package of theirs, the ones that are about as big as a 6-inch cake layer. I have been very good about eating what is here in the house which needs minimal prep work. I have the stove, but no prep area and no muffin pans. I just had an idea. Dollar Stores probably have throw away muffin tins for $1.25 - a lot less than Costco muffins.. You are lucky Maurice and nameless orange kitty were civil with each other. It is never wise to break up a skirmish between two cats!

    1. I ended up just making some cornbread and it was good.
You're right- even Costco's bakery items are huge. I bet the Dollar Store does have disposable muffin tins.
I wouldn't even try to break up a fight like that unless it was just to start throwing things. I know what Maurice can do on her own to my skin.

  5. I LOVE the mermaid ornament!! I need a friend like Linda Sue.
I read that same book. I found it a tad quirky. It fits in with your story of the two cats. I also have a story or two about a wobble in my universe but i will hold onto them. I tend to go off on a tangent and ain’t nobody got time for that!

    1. That book is VERY quirky.
It's odd when things happen that are sort of, yeah, wobbly. I think we've probably all experienced some of them. Is it the SIM?

  6. That's a long drive. He's intrepid.
I found that book too upsetting. I can't read about hapless people struggling so I had to stop. I tend to take it a little too personally and forget it's fiction.

I loved molding clay using leaves back when I did clay work. Mine tended to break, too thin for the kind of clay, but I did enjoy them

    1. I can generally definitely remember that fiction is fiction which is not to say that it can't affect me. Sometimes very strongly.
Perhaps this book was a little too over-the-top in some ways for me to get really emotionally invested in it. There WERE a lot of deaths.
I'm aways trying to make things in pottery too thin. Jessie just shakes her head and moves on.

  7. Yeses yes, crispy tofu recipe please. When I purchase tofu I usually forget why, and let it sit forever. Loved hearing about your cats triangle moment. You'll probably remember it too! And the mermaid on the shell is totally gorgeous. I stopped and just dived into enjoying it totally!

  8. What is so great about "great literature" anyway? Any book I have looked at that is called "literature" in the bookshop is so long-winded and rambling and downright stuffy, that I have trouble remembering what the actual story is. I'll take "pop fiction" any day, a story that grabs me on page one and holds me to the end. Murder mysteries.
Can you get the original crow off that bamboo stick and use slip to add it to your home made magnolia leaves?
Low 50s is considered chilly where I live too, but thankfully we are warming up now, with today being about 29C (84F). I'm considering taking my duck off the bed and putting it away for the summer as soon as the nights get too warm for comfort. I hope your heating gets fixed quickly.

    1. Sorry but I cannot agree with you on this. There is a great deal of "literature" that I have read and loved so very much. And the definition of literature is pretty broad, too. It's definitely not all long-winded and stuffy. I like an occasional thriller or murder mystery occasionally but the book has to be well-written. If not, I can't read it.
Not going to rescue the original crow. I am going to try and do better than that one.

  9. Linda Sue has talent! I hope I'm thinking of the right person but I'm pretty sure it was her visiting London not too long ago and taking really unusual pictures (not a picture of Buckingham Palace in sight)! And yes please to the eggplant casserole. I'm making an eggplant dish for later tonight but I'm always up for new recipes to try!

  10. I immediately thought of Magnolia when I saw the mermaid. So beautiful! It sure was a Linda Sue kind of day. Such beauty and thoughtfulness. Low 50s! Brrr. We were out the other morning and it was only 65. SG didn’t have a jacket and froze. We had friends with a Mexican restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut. They had one of those paper mache dolls. Her name was printed across her chest. And they told us exactly where she came from!

    1. Yes! This one used to have her name painted on her too but she has faded over the years. I have a newer one who still does have her name.
Supposed to get down to 47 tonight. Are you kidding me? It's time for me to do a search of the coat closet to see what's actually in there.

  12. Messed up my first comment so here's another try. I love the Maggie mermaid photo...it's uncanny how much it resembles her. Perfect. I wish I enjoyed eggplant, but no matter how many ways prepared, I simply do not. However, I really enjoy tofu and look forward to your recipe! We woke up this morning to 52 degrees 'inside' our wee cottage here on the coast of Maine. Guess who forgot to order propane? No delivery possible until later this week so packing up and off we go, back home to NH and central heat. Boo. I may be a Yankee gal and used to the cold but that's too brisk an inside temp, even for me! Glad Mr. Moon is on his way home and wishing him safe travels.

    1. Oh no! No propane! I hate it when that happens! I bet you it's going to be close to 52 degrees here tomorrow morning.
I'm the same way about Brussels Sprouts as you are about eggplant.

  13. I thought the mermaid was Maggie.
Have you ever tried just putting a leaf on the clay and gently rolling it with a roller. It will leave a beautiful imprint. Good luck with the crow. I'm off to pottery this morning and I am impatient for it. We had no pottery last week and I miss the ladies and I miss the clay.
I hope you get your heat fixed. I may live in a cold climate but I do not like a cold house. Makes me very cranky.
I'm glad you liked the book. We talked about it at book club and I realized how messed up PJ was and how much his ex-wife enabled him. He did grow but what a child! I did like the book better before we talked about it :(
Hope Mr. Moon and his friends have a safe drive.

    1. What I did was to put the leaf on the clay and just gently press it with my hands. That seemed to be good enough.
I know you had a great time in your pottery class today.
Heater not yet fixed. Part ordered.
      Sigh.
Yeah, PJ was a mess and a half and Ivy was certainly an enabler. I fell in love with Fred, her boyfriend/fiancee. Lots of people going through a lot of changes in that book. And you know what? PJ didn't have to be a great guy for you to like the book.

    2. PJ was a mess but before his daughter drowned he was a good dad. He was like a child in some ways but still had good intentions.

    3. Yes. I agree. And I don't think there's any doubt that he loved both his children and his wife so very much. He just didn't know how to do that right. I really like the way he and Sophie gradually made their way back to each other. She and her mother had both been so patient with him. Enabling? Yes. But still loving, I think.

40+ degrees F. is cold and even colder when the furnace isn't working. I hope the sunshine will warm your house at least a little.
Two mornings in a row, we have heavy frost on the grass It is cold until about noon when the temperature rises to 50 degrees F. Jacket weather is here.
Fleece lined leggings are warm and cozy. I love mine. Definitely buy them when you get back to TJ Maxx. Amazon likely has them too.

  16. So your central heat AND your space heater are both not working?! What are the odds? Are you sure your electricity isn't out? :)

The picture of your glittery mermaid makes a great header. The moment with the cats was a bit surreal -- it's funny that Maurice has a doppelganger.

Cold here too the last three nights. Days warm up nicely though without being hellish hot. The forecast is mild so perhaps summer is really over.
Good job on the leaves. You'll get the bird.

Yep. Sort of the same weather here. Very cool mornings, then gets warmer during the day. Sort of perfect. Especially is your heater's working.
I'm working on that bird. I really have no feel for this but I'm trying.
I immediately looked up that book on my library's audio book site and I have it on hold. Thank you!

  18. An unbird-like thing about your cramic bird-attempt is that the head looks too mammalian-- as if it had a snout instead of a beak. Snouts flow out of the head shape (or, with cats, just push forward a little bit), while beaks often look jammed in, like a knitting needle in a pin cushion. And they very, very, rarely turn up at the tip. So, given the smoothly gradated snouty head and elongated body, you've ended up with something that looks like a cross between a possum and a weasel....but hey, kudos for trying!
I've always admired hand-carved traditional duck decoys (while not liking their purpose, alas) because the accuracy and specificity of the details reflects how keenly aware the carvers were of the essence of duckishness. Probably the carvers would be at a loss trying to convincingly represent some other bit of nature (an anole, maybe?) whose form and defining characteristics they had no reason to know so well.
Hey, maybe try sketching your crows from life! Even if the results are embarrassingly bad, you will sharpen your eye and get a better grasp on their shape. (Plus you might really enjoy it.)

Yeah. I'm sure you're right about all of that. The fact is, I am not good at all in translating life into either clay or on paper. I'm just not. But I want to keep trying on this bird.
And hey! Thanks for pointing out that my first attempt looked like a cross between a possum and a weasel. You've really boosted my confidence!

  19. The mermaid is such a great portrait of your granddaughter - and of course that is natural given her living in Florida which is surely mermaid territory. Your leaves and crows projects reminded me of a fabric crow I made years ago based on on-line directions - I checked and it was from Anne Woods it looks like. The whole time I kept thinking mine was not bird shaped and in the end it was quite satisfactory, so clearly years of casual observation had not taught me much about crow shapes. Glad to hear your fella is heading home, hopefully a good time was had by all and there are enough cookies to keep them going along the road.
