Well, at least I am pretty sure I know what species of fish Dottie Frances is- she is a clownfish.

I got her almost, almost finished today. I just have a little more to do and then I can use up the rest of my tickets and get that lady fired. I can start another project and the thought of that is somewhat exciting.
We got rain today and I am thrilled that it has fallen on my planted seeds. Grow, babies! Swell up and put forth life! Let's get this garden party started!
And in the course of this evening I have written a review of Hamnet which was not flattering and talked about how there are so many well-regarded books that I am not in tune with at all.
In a way, this makes me feel uneducated and also weird.
La-di-da.
I am who I am. I like what I like. And I do not like what I do not like. I deleted the whole review.

Ah, the star flower solves a quandary for me - we visited a wonderful nursery (we are visiting in western NY) and there was a big pot of something glorious with blue flowers, but everyone else was in the car to leave and I couldn't find a tag on the pot and haven't been able to find its identity on line. Seeing your sky flower I'm sure that is what it is. How satisfying!

Your little fishie is adorbs. I love her - curious to see how she bakes. Sally read the book, saw the play in London, and went to the film. She loved all three but especially the film . the sets were gorgeous. Jessie Buckley is a prize!
ReplyDeleteI told Glen that reading the book was making me weary. And it was. It was so depressing and so overwritten and of course the main character was a wise woman who had psychic abilities and knew how to use herbs and plants in every way possible which is such a trope by now.

DeleteNot my cup of tea either and have no interest in seeing the movie so if that makes you uneducated and weird, you are not alone. There was a shop that had sky flower growing all around the entrance on a trellis and I asked the woman what it was. You could tell by the way she answered she was tired of answering that question. Damn, lady, put up a sign.

I consider myself as having SOME taste in books and will not finish a book that is poorly written, hasn't got much of a plot, and doesn't have interesting characters.
DeleteI just find that so often books that are lauded and even awarded seem so flat to me. Too purposefully literary. It's sort of like acting- you don't want to catch the actor acting. With a book, you don't want to catch the author writing. Do you know what I mean?
Great little fish and of course I look forward to seeing her finished. We can agree to disagree on lots! I loved Hamnet the book, and so have avoided the movie so far, which might be disappointing in comparison. Your beautiful flower photo is so delightful!
ReplyDeleteI know that a LOT of people loved and do love the book. It just was not for me. I imagine that all of us have so many different things that we've experienced that inform our reading taste.

DeleteThe color of that flower is sort of like the color of the dress whose picture I posted a few days ago. Not as intense but very similar color.
The pastel-ness of the colors on the fish will disappear and be replaced by far deeper and more vibrant ones. And they will be shiny! This is the hope.
Maurice looks like she just finished scrubbing her little face with a spit licked paw and forgot to smooth things out afterward, ike towel drying one's hair after a shampoo and then not running a comb through it.

DeleteIn recent times, I find I am more frequently perturbed by books that get fabulous reviews and yet leave me cold just a few chapters in. Books that are trying too hard to be serious/angry/disturbing. Trying to win a Booker or some other literary prize. Leaves me with a stack of DNF books (thankfully, mostly library books). I guess I cannot be considered erudite. Oh well. Such is life.

DeleteI loved that movie so much. Reexamining the relationship between William and Anne from a new angle was very interesting. What if it were love? What if she was a strong woman who preferred to stay in the place she knew? (Like you.) What if he loved her enough to allow her to be herself? I was fascinated by the thought. That being said, the death of Hamnet was so gutting that I will never watch the movie again. I received the book for Christmas but haven't read it yet, so I reserve judgement on that.
