I took two photos today and both of them were of Maurice. I spent most of the day in town and I don't think y'all need a picture of Costco. Or Publix. Or even Oak Tree Treasures, as lovely as it is.
I have no idea what Maurice was examining there but it must have been some sort of little critter.
I was thinking the other day about Maurice bringing me mice and other delectable meat treats and it occurred to me that I get so excited when I think the crows have brought me a gift of any sort but when Maurice brings me something my reaction is invariably, "Dammit, Maurice! What the fucking fuck?"
And that's so wrong.
That cat went out and hunted with forethought. She wanted to catch something to give to me which she did. She then brought it into the house or on the porch, leaving it where she knows I'll come across it because she is more familiar with my paths and patterns than I am myself, and on top of all of that, whatever she's brought me is almost always so unmarked by struggle or blood that she must have made a quick, lethal kill which is also not nothing. It's almost like someone giving you an entire ice cream cone, unlicked, whole, and all for you, rather than handing you a soggy mess of cone with most of the ice cream gone saying, "Here. You want this? I've had all I want."
We can say what we will, or at least I can say what I will, about Maurice's very odd and not always pacifistic behavior but in giving me these gifts she is showing her love and concern for me in the way she knows best. She has to think about doing it, create a strategy, do it, and deliver it.
And instead of praising her or marveling at her hunting abilities, her obvious affection for me, I yell at her, mostly in profane ways.
Why IS this? Well, because I don't like finding dead animals in my house or on my porch. I am obviously not going to eat them, and obviously they must be disposed of which is not a pleasant task.
But. Their meaning to the cat is completely and purely altruistic and in the end, that is what matters, isn't it?
And it is such a feline thing to do. What would the canine equivalent be? The only thing they bring humans are balls and sticks that the human can throw for them which brings the dogs much pleasure and I guess, shows that the dog enjoys interacting with the human and that's nice. But it's not the same.
I realize that dogs show their affection in different ways. Defending their humans sometimes. We all know stories of dogs who have protected their owners or the children of their owners or somehow got the attention of another human when their human is in a dangerous situation.
"Timmy's in the well!"
I've heard of cats doing things like this too, but they are not known for it, like dogs are.
And this is not a cats versus dogs thing. Or even a cats versus crows thing. Crows are wild animals, and as such, are not generally expected to interact with humans in the ways that a domesticated animal would although it would seem that cats are not domesticated in the least, but are essentially the same animals they were when they first began living with humans. A deal was struck. The cats would come into the living spaces of people and help rid them of vermin and the people would let them sleep by the fire or stroke them or even let them have a bite of mammoth entrail from time to time.
So I've been thinking about all of this and realizing I don't give Maurice enough credit for doing the things for me she perceives as true gifts from the heart.
I should at least maybe thank her before I start in with the cussing.
Mr. Moon has gone to the hospital to see one of his very best friends and his best fishing buddy. There was an incident this morning which caused his wife to take him directly to the ER and they're trying to figure out what happened.
Glen has had so many friends who have had medical problems or even terminal diagnoses lately, or who, in fact, have died. He takes each one with great sorrow. I don't think I'm being hyperbolic here. The man cares very, very much about his friends.
And as he worries about his friend, I worry about him. He spent all day on a bush hog, clearing land at the property where he sometimes hunts, to get it ready for the season. He does not own this property and he never will. He may not even hunt it. He does love to put up the trail cams and watch what comes in to feed. Bears and raccoons and sometimes even deer.
And after working all day long in this heat, I know he's exhausted and spent. Hell, I'm feeling complainy about having had to shop all afternoon.
Poor baby.
But his exhaustion is the serious kind, the kind where you sweat all day long, and I hate that he's not in his chair, resting now. I know he pushes himself too hard but I also know there's nothing I can do about it. There is simply no way he would not go to the hospital to see his friend and his friend's wife. I know that after all he did today, his legs are even less steady than usual. I asked him to please take his cane, thinking of those long, polished hospital hallways.
For once, he listened to me. That alone tells you how tired he is.
These are the things you never consider when you're young and crazy in love, standing in front of a justice of the peace or a notary or a preacher along with your family and your friends, and vow to love each other in sickness and in health.
You have no idea what that even begins to mean.
I often wonder if this is why older women at weddings are so apt to cry.
They know. They do know.
Pottery tomorrow.
Love...Ms. Moon

Well, I hope Mr. Moon's friend will be all right.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the cat brings you things to bug you and they are not a treat at all because she knows it will annoy you!?! I guess we will never know. :)
Oh now you have gone and ruined it for me! I was thinking all warm and fuzzy thoughts about Maurice - what a sweety and so on... Oh, well. Maybe she is just a little bitchy cat.
DeleteEllen, I don't think so. I honestly think she's trying to please me. Or just feed me.
DeleteAnd Ana- she is indeed a bitchy cat but that doesn't mean she can't have a good heart.
Mr. Moon is a sweet man. Who wouldn’t want him as a friend?
ReplyDeleteAnd I enjoyed the analysis of Maurice’s thought processes. I think you’re right. She’s just showing loyalty and love the only way she can. I love animals. Such a cutie, your Maurice.
Enjoy pottery! Can’t wait to see your leaf and 🐠 fish after they’re fired. -Nicol
Glen is incredibly sweet. But, you know- he's human. He can be grouchy.
DeleteI think my reframing of Maurice's actions is valid. And she is a pretty old lady except when she has her teeth and claws in my arm.
Your insights into Maurice's motivations is very interesting and really sounds right. Maybe give her a treat and just cuss in your head when a gift happens? And yes, I have similar worries with my over-achiever husband - take care of yourself a bit, man! Doesn't help, however.
ReplyDeleteCeci
No. It does not help. If your husband is like mine, he has a great capacity to push himself beyond reasonable limits. I really could not do it.
DeleteMaurices gifts are well meaning instinctive gifts. An alternative behavior would be easier for everyone, but really, I do not see things changing anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteGM's devotion and loyalty to his friends is impressive. He is a good man. He'll need a day of rest after his very full day today.
Susan
No. I don't see Maurice changing her ways. She may get too old and feeble to hunt but will she?
DeleteOh, Glen was back at the hospital today. All day. At least he wasn't outside on a bush hog.
I admit I don't say nice things when my Orange Guy (our cat, not the president) leaves a baby bunny on the welcome mat. I mean, leave the bunnies alone, just bring me the mice! Mr. Moon being tired and still visiting his friend: my heart! There is nothing I've encountered yet that's as difficult as seeing my husband get older. When he nods off on the couch after a long day and I see how old he looks, oh dear.
ReplyDeleteI guess cats really don't make a distinction when it comes to fresh meat for their people. Smallish, with fur, catchable.
DeleteI hate coming into the Glen Den and seeing Glen so asleep in his chair that it's hard for me to wake him up. He works himself into complete exhaustion. I'm surprised he makes it to bed sometimes. And it scares me.
What a thoughtful post. I like how you've arrives here in your thinking about Maurice, and I think it's spot on.
ReplyDeleteSo hard to see friends ageing and dying. The older you get, the more you see, and it never gets easier. But Mr Moon's doing what he wants to do for his friends, so there's that.
I give Maurice treats and she brings me treats. The difference is- she eats the treats I give her while I cannot bring myself to try a mouse.
DeleteNo. Losing or knowing we're going to lose the people we love is never, ever easy.
I lost two of my best friends at a pretty early age and I know that's had an effect on me. I'm afraid I hold myself back at least a tiny bit when it comes to relationships now because I know how very painful and hard it is to lose someone you love so completely. And Glen's sister died at a young age and I was close to her. It's just hard and the fact is- there is no preventing the pain when someone you love dies. I know that, and yet...
I love carefully.
It's so hard watching those we love age and decline. I know I find aging hard to deal with personally but what is the alternative? I'm glad Mr. Moon took his cane with him.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about the things cats kill and bring to us like this. I know it's supposed to be a gift but never thought about the forethought that goes into it. It's not like they have a spare dead mouse lying around, they thought about you and killed it for you. I'll stop yelling Bagheera for bringing me dead things, although she's slowed down so much that I don't think she can catch anything anymore.
I saw the doc today. I'm so tired because my ferritin is low, so now I'm on ferritin pills. I'm hoping they help quickly.
"It's not like they have a spare dead mouse lying around..."
DeleteAmen! No! They bring us fresh meat, killed just for us!
The alternative to aging is to die and sometimes I think that if one has a quick and painless death (the dream), it probably wouldn't be so bad. I mean, if you're dead, you won't know. It's the mental anguish and the pain of knowing you're going to die after getting a terminal diagnosis that has to be the hardest part.
Honestly, I did not know that ferritin can sometimes be low and needs to be supplemented. I'm glad you got that figured out.
Uh-Oh, I feel my eyes tearing up, I do hope Mr Moon gets some rest, or at least his legs get rest if he is sitting while visiting with his friends and I hope the friend is soon able to go home. Could you possibly learn to thank Maurice without the cussing? and would it make any difference to the way she treats you? Less scratching? Probably not after all this time.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Maurice cares if I cuss. She probably would have left a long time ago if she did. But she DOES know when I'm angry or perturbed from my tone of voice.
DeleteI don't think there's anything I could do to get her to stop the clawing and biting unless I got her declawed and de-toothed. And we all know that's not going to happen.
I hope Mr. Moon doesn't tire so much his legs give out...and I'm sorry about his friends. Does not do much good to cuss at cats, just don't step on or trip over their gifts...that can get messy. I like the photos in your previous post. August is so tall
ReplyDeleteHe has a neurological situation going on with his legs that no one can seem to diagnose which causes weakness and lack of balance so he's already at a great disadvantage. You know about these things. But when he pushes himself so hard I really worry. He tells me I worry too much and I tell him I can't help it.
DeleteYeah. Cats don't care if you cuss or not. They're above such human foibles.
AWWW now I feel sad for your misunderstood feline, At first , I thought Maurice was a long oddly shaped pumpkin, Maurice is just being a cat living with her humans as best she can, on her terms! and don't forget it! The wedding vows are invented to keep folks together even when neither one can hear or see or walk..."growing old together" is not the best idea! Sounds reasonable when we are young , when becoming old futs under the same roof is not a consideration.
ReplyDeleteWell, when those wedding vows were written, people only probably lived into their thirties or forties which made it a lot easier to keep them, I would imagine.
DeleteBut you know- there does reach a point where you wouldn't leave someone if you could. Love is a weird thing and there are so many stages of it.
I had never thought about a cat hunting and bringing the kill to the humans in the house the way you described. And it makes sense how you worded it. Your description of Glen and having friends get ill is kind of what I've been experiencing. And you are right, older women that cry at weddings to know.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry about your friends. I have lost so many dear friends, some of them best friends, and all of them at ages way too young. It's just damn hard. Take care of YOURSELF while you go through this, okay?
DeleteYep. Older women know. So do older men but I am not sure the straight ones think about it the same way women do.
You post made me think of this Mary Chapin Carpenter song. I've always thought it was hauntingly beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FeNz9UHjAs
ReplyDeleteThat is such a beautiful song and Mary Chapin Carpenter does a magnificent version of it. I don't think I realized that John Lennon wrote the song. I just read that it was one of the first songs he ever wrote and a recording of it was finally released in 1984 after his death on the album "Milk and Honey."
DeleteI didn't realize Lennon wrote it, but I quite enjoyed hearing him sing it. I've always known it from MCC's Party Doll album. It appears that she sang it on a John Lennon tribute album called Working Class Hero too. That album is new to me too. Thanks for looking that up and sharing it with me. I appreciate the correction.
DeleteI am sure you look after your man with the same affection that Maurice is looking after you - at least!
ReplyDeleteCats are a miracle to me even after half a life time with them. One of my cats could only come and rest on my lap - for hours - after she had bitten me to the point of drawing blood. It was a complicated but deep relationship.
The young and very active dog in my daughter's house spent every night and most of the daytime beside my bed when I first came home from the hospital with the leg in a cast which I had to elevate 23/7. From time to time, he gave me what I considered to be a long compassionate look and briefly put a paw on the cast.
I try! But you know men- do they listen to us? No. They do not.
DeleteTo be fair- do we always listen to them? No. We do not.
My cat who appears to love me and crave affection from me bites me and claws me and draws blood at least once a week. She does the same with my husband.
I think dogs can be very empathetic. I think cats can be too. They know. They sense it when we are in pain or ill. When I broke some ribs, my cat spent a great deal of time with me. I called her my nurse cat. And who knows? Maybe both dogs and cats have some sort of healing ability that requires them to be close to us. It's nice to think that, isn't it?
Yes our feline hunters do have their own way of being helpful. Too bad we end up stepping on their kills half the time. They do have such limited communication skills! I hope your hubby's friend is found to be well, and that his efforts to visit him were appreciated. Have fun potting tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteI really try to avoid stepping on a dead animal. At least when Maurice leaves me a gift on the back porch, she knows I'll be awake to see it.
DeleteGlen's friend is not doing well, unfortunately. He is very, very ill.
Pottery was soothing today.
Cat never brings me anything for which I'm grateful. But she does come when I call, mostly.
ReplyDeleteWell, we are at that age when our contemporaries start to fail. And us too. My brother is having heart surgery tomorrow.
My cat comes when I call if she feels like it. She's always right there when it's treat time, for sure. Like she KNOWS when it's four o'clock in the afternoon. She even deals with the time change. WTF?
DeleteI truly hope your brother's surgery goes well and helps whatever it is which requires the surgery. Medical science has come a very, very long way when it comes to heart surgery, hasn't it?
This post. Oh my gosh. I am living this post.
ReplyDeleteWe are living parallel lives in many ways, Debby.
DeleteTo be honest, I doubt that Maurice thinks much about your reaction to her gifts. I have a feeling she'd keep on giving them no matter how you responded! It's just being a cat. Perhaps she wonders why you're not eating it right away!
ReplyDeleteI hope Glen takes care of himself through these trials.
