Wanna See Some Pumpkins? SURE You Do

Ellen D. asked me if I could take a picture of the shadow cast by that valence in the bathroom and I did take one on the door of the bathroom and it was okay but then I took this one in the spirit of being all artsy and shit. I do like black and white. I also love my skillets.

Well, suddenly the Seminole pumpkins are pumping out pumpkins. They are appearing in more numbers every day. I wonder how many will make it to maturity. I just looked them up and supposedly, they can grow to be from around 5-12 pounds apiece when they're ready to harvest. Also, due to various varieties, they can come in different shapes and colors. Some are roundish, resembling jack-o-lantern pumpkins, except with bumps while some are even shaped like butternut squash. And the vines can grow to be 25 feet long.
This I knew already.

Here are three I found today while just giving the garden a casual look over.

Some are growing on the fence, some inside the fence, and some outside the fence. Their love (of life) obviously knows no bounds.

I'm about to pull up the rest of the pea vines. It is time.
I will miss their delicate and exquisitely ladylike blossoms. Here's one of the last ones.

I am looking forward to the okra blooms if we ever get any planted. They look like hibiscus because they are related.

I did not take that picture but swiped it off a blog called The Almost Retired Life via google images. I hope they don't sue me. I liked this photo because it shows the flower and the vegetable.
Let's try not to get into a big discussion about whether or not okra is even edible. To some, it simply is not. To others, it's a treat whether fried, stewed with tomatoes, or pickled. When it comes to pickles, I think okra puts cucumbers to shame. And another thing to know about okra is that it came from Africa as did so many of the best things in this country. One of the African words for it is "gumbo" and you can make the connection from there.

The heat is unrelenting. I didn't even try to do any outside work today. I spent some time trying to research the local candidates I'll be voting for or against on Tuesday. I did not early-vote this year. Not sure why. I think I feel daunted, not by the big races like governor, senators, representatives, but by circuit judges, school board members, commissioner of agriculture.
Etc. I tried to do my due diligence but I am so woefully ignorant. Not when it comes to the higher offices, of course.
Florida actually has the possibility of electing it's first Black governor this year, which, HURRAY! except NOPE! He's a huge supporter of the orange POS in the White House and has been for years. Also, he is a Republican.
Only in Florida.
And here in good old Jefferson County, candidates' promises all seemingly must include a declaration of their deep faith in Jesus and the offices they hold in their churches.
It's fucking depressing.
Not all. But many. One candidate running for the House, posted a long Facebook thing about how he's so sorry for things he did in his past but now he's found Jesus and is a faithful member of his church and that his sordid past shaped him into who he is today and that's why he's the best candidate. I'm not saying this isn't possible. I'm just saying, "Shut the Fuck Up."
And the Democratic nominee who is sure to win the primary for governor was a Republican up until four years ago.

Sorry. It's too hot. I'm cranky. I'm old. As my dear friend Balboa would have said, "Bite me."
But I'm going to vote. You better believe it.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. As always, I have to say I love the okra blossoms.
Good for you for doing the homework about candidates, and definitely for voting even in the discouraging climate (both senses) of Florida just now

    1. The hard ones for me are the ones with no political affiliation like circuit court judges. I don't know these people!

  2. Yes, please vote! Too many in your country who are eligible, just don't, they think "what can my one vote matter?" Well, if a 100 or a 1000 of those "one votes" actually made it to the voting booth it will make a difference!
I am also ignorant about who to vote for and why I should choose this person over that person, but I do it, mostly by NOT choosing those I hate the most.

    1. Of course I'll vote! I always do.
The hard part is figuring out which candidates I hate the most.

  3. Anybody who takes the religious route to say that makes them better and improved is good information. to stay the fuck away from that. Blech.

I am mixed on okra. I want to like it, like I want to like seafood and football.

I can’t wait to see your pumpkin crop! Maybe Maurice will find another good place in a patch for a photo shoot. She always finds the best places.

    1. Right? Like someone would never lie about their close and personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Give me a break. And how many pastors are arrested every year for pedophilia?
I have no desire to like football. I'm glad I like okra and seafood though.
Maurice does indeed consider where she'd look most photogenic, I think.

    1. Well of course. Some categories are non-party affiliated. Like judges and certain local positions. Those are the ones I trip up on.

  6. I had no idea okra had such beautiful flowers. (I’ve never had okra.) I also didn’t know about the connection between gumbo and okra. Politics is a hideous business. American politics right now is an embarrassment. And Florida politics, appalling. I do love your first artsy and shit photo.

    1. I wonder if you'd like okra. Or gumbo, for that matter. The kind made with okra and sometimes shrimp and sausage or other delicious things.
Florida politics are just so depressing. And yes, embarrassing. Yet we do have what I consider to be good candidates running for some offices. My old therapist's son is running for congress in this district and I know he has to be a good person.

  7. I love okra! My friend grows it on her farm and sells it at her farmer's market. I pick it and then put a basket by her green bean display. With the Appalachian and Middle Eastern populations in the area, as well as people like me who like okra, the basket empties quickly. Pickled okra...MmmmmMmmm!

    1. Yay! I love that! Okra is absolutely used in different culture cuisines. Indian, too.

  9. Thanks for the photo of the valance shadow in your bathroom! Seeing my name in your post made me feel pretty special! :)
Of course, you will vote BLUE! You have common sense!

  10. I did what homework I could from afar, but I didn't realize David Jolly was a Republican that recently. Where are all the Dems in Florida?! Still, I think he'll have more sense than DeSantis.

    1. Well, at least Gwen Graham is running with him. Not that I think the lieutenant governor has a whole lot of power. She's definitely from good Democratic stock though.
Anybody has to be better than DeSatan. Well, I think.

  11. I've never seen an okra plant and do not think they are grown in MA. Okra is carried in the frozen food isle of most MA grocery stores, but I would not know what to do with it.
Your pumpkins are doing well. The trailing vines, flowers and pumpkins look great. You are going to have a good harvest.
My friends who bought a home on Captiva Island a block from the sea are there now and are suffering the heat too. They added an inground pool and tell me they use the pool daily. MA family and friends like visiting, but not right now.
