Living In Lloyd Ain't So Bad

I slept in this morning and as you can see, Maurice slothed it up longer than I did. Eventually she managed to arise and of course she wanted her morning treat which is usually about ten Temptations but this morning I gave her a little bit of what Mark had bought for her when we were gone which is something called a "lickable treat" that comes in a pouch and is squeezed out. It's like really thick gravy or a paste or something. I have no idea how much Mark gave her but I only gave her about half a tablespoon and boy, did she love it.
Yes. Yes she did. Mark probably put it ON her Temptations but I am not as sweet as he is.

I really didn't get much of anything done today but I feel no shame. None whatsoever. Of course I hung the bed linens on the line after washing them because it's been a beautiful day and I do enjoy that. Both the doing of it and the results.

Perfect drying on the line day.

I spent a little bit of time in the garden. I knew I was going to Tallahassee at some point to pick up my hormones. Every time I write or say that word I think of Ninny (Jessica Tandy) in "Fried Green Tomatoes" telling Evelyn (Kathy Bates), "Honey, you just need you some hormones!" What a great book by Fannie Flag and what a great movie. If you're in a book club and y'all haven't read that one, I can't think of a better choice.
So knowing I was going to town I didn't start any projects but when I called to see if my prescription was ready the woman who answered said, "Yes, but it's not REALLY going to be ready until later in the afternoon."
Say what?
"About how late in the afternoon?" I asked.
"Oh, definitely by four."
Well, hell.
I then planned to go do some more clearing out of crocosmia choked beds but before I got to that, I got a text from the pharmacy saying that my prescription was ready for pick-up. Could we get a little communication here? I needed to eat lunch first and oh, you know how these things go.

I stopped by Publix on my way home from that little chore and got myself some salmon (Honey, you just need you some salmon!) and when I got home I shelled the overly mature snow peas I'd picked this morning. I really had no idea if the peas of the snow peas would be fit to eat but they are indeed quite sweet. It took me at least twenty minutes to shell them and this is the entire haul.

Plenty for one serving.
And by the way, that is one of my favorite little bowls. I have two. If the thrift store where I bought them had had ten of them, I would have bought every one. So I'm going to cook those peas and also some of our scabby potatoes and make a nice little white sauce to go on them and I'll cook my salmon with lemon juice and dill which is the way I like it. Simple and to the point.

Mr. Moon decided to head to the coast to help his friend work on his trolling motor tonight instead of getting up early tomorrow to make the drive. I talked to him and he said that he needs to get back into floor-laying-shape condition because he is tired. He sounded rather merry though.

I took a few pictures when I was in the garden this morning.

I got all the way down on the ground to take this baby eggplant's picture. It's not as big as the end of my thumb. I think it's pretty though.

The black cherry tomatoes are blowing me away. I just think they're beautiful. I have yet to eat a ripe one. How do I know when they're ripe?

And of course, a stroll in the garden would not be complete without my orange familiar.

I think she really likes the pine straw mulch I put down yesterday. She dug around in it a little while and made a little wallowed-out nest. I wonder if she likes the smell of it?

My magnolia tree finally gave me a bloom close enough for me to pick and I did. It had already started its evening closing but was still open enough to show me its complex and fascinating reproductive parts.

I put it in a vase on the hallway vanity altar.

And this is what it looks like now, having closed its eyes and pulled its covers up for the night.

It will open back up tomorrow and will be finished with this cold, cruel world in another day or so. While it's still here though, I will be able to catch its scent every time I walk past it. I just read online that the magnolia grandiflora flower is one of the oldest forms of flowers still alive and the article went on to describe a bunch of technical stuff about the botanical purposes of it all but I don't really want to know that. It's a magic flower and that's enough for me.

Having made up the bed with the clean sheets and the freshly washed cotton muslin gauze blanket, the whole room now smells of that ineffable element of breezes which have traveled through green leaves after being heated by the sun.

If I were a real photographer I would have taken that fan out of the frame and probably the Tums container too. I can't remember the last time I took a Tums in the middle of the night but it's there if I want it while the fan is used every night of the year, no matter the temperature. Dead of winter?
Fan on, baby.

Okay. So clean sheets checked off the list. Martini?
You bet.

I'm going to go cook some peas and potatoes and salmon.

Happy Friday, y'all.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Yep, that is a wonderful little bowl and bowls are my favorite things to eat out of - so handy for messy folks. I was sure you were going to say that when you got to the pharmacy your meds weren't ready - I was vicariously frustrated.

    Cheers,

    Ceci

    1. I like eating out of bowls too!
If those meds hadn't been ready...well, it would not have been pretty.

What REALLY takes the cake is the shot of laundy on the line under that massive tree in your lush yard. So beautiful!

    1. You're so right about the bowl but with the peas in it, it is pure pretty.
That tree over the clothesline is a live oak that has probably doubled in size since we moved here. Eventually, I hope, it will be a big ol' matriarch. Of course I'll be dead but...

  3. It's hard to imagine it being so hot, up here in New York it's been a chilly, rainy spring. I did manage to dry my big heavy comforter out on the deck today, and yes, I still need a big heavy comforter, but shh, also a fan blowing on me, all year round... Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe is one of the best books, love Fannie Flagg. The movie is so good too, "I'm older and I have more insurance." "Oh Ed, you make such a big deal out of everything." Love it. Love the bowl for the peas too, so lovely.

    1. Me too! My favorite combination, fan and heavy covers!
I think Fannie Flagg is highly underrated or at least ignored, as a damn fine writer of life in the south during earlier times. I think they did a good job of making the movie from that book.

  4. I loved Jessica Tandy. She seemed like a woman who lived life on her own terms, at least she played those kind of women, and I admired that.

I had to chuckle because I have Tums on my bedside table too.

Right now my husband is pissed off at me because I told him to stop bothering Jack about eating. And my ex husband is also pissed off at me because I didn't scrape and kowtow to him. I am so done with men.

    1. Jessica Tandy was a fine actress for sure. I love that she was married to Hugh Cronyn for so long. They were a beautiful couple.
My husband just got home with fresh shrimp from the coast and two beautiful magnolia blossoms and still- I snapped at him about something ridiculous. I wonder if Jessica snapped at Hugh occasionally? Probably. He was, after all, a man.

  5. I would be in heaven with those peas and some potatoes in that lovely bowl. I have a similar bowl...in depth and shape....belonged to my husbands granny Lupe.... her china was *harmony house* and it is white..with lovely tiny pink roses on it. I eat about 75% of my meals out of that bowl....so....bring me those peas and potatoes! LOL!

    2. Never been possible. Apartments or condos with rules and anyway no room. Or gardens with birds eating mulberries and pooping red all over the sheets. Never done it.

  7. I need to get one of those small fans, I have one going all night every night too, but all I have is a large pedestal fan which I have to move into position and then move back again after I get up each morning. The peas look delicious. I have no idea how to tell when those tomatoes are ripe apart from trying one now and again.

    1. I love my little fan. I have a different kind on the back porch. Also, I have one for the porch when it gets really hot. That thing could power an airplane.
I have been trying the tomatoes. So far, not ready.

  8. Thank you for mentioning Fried Green Tomatoes. I loved the film and think the book would make a really good listen on one of my walks! AND I love that dish. I collected so many from car boot sales over the years that and get so much pleasure out of using them!

    1. And see- that's the thing about collecting things. To collect just for the sake of collecting holds no interest in me. Collecting for things that bring me pleasure is absolutely worth it.

  9. Those Black Cherry Tomatoes are beautiful and would look terrific in a Salad, adding Color and Flavor. I've heard that when the Skin isn't shiny and has gone more matte, then the ripening has begun and you can pick them. But some of the more interesting varieties easily fall off the vine at the slightest touch. I've never had any Luck growing the Heirloom Varieties of Tomatoes. So, no wonder they cost more at the Stores.

    1. You may be right about the matte skin. I'll look for that. These sure are still shiny! Heirlooms do seem to be more delicate, especially when it comes to tomatoes.

  10. I've never even heard of black cherry tomatoes! Love your take on the Magic Flower. And I laughed at your musings on the fan-in-the-photo and the bottle of Tums, thanks!

    1. Funny how there are so many things in the world we are not even slightly aware of.
      Magnolias are magic flowers.
I would happily give up my Tums but never, ever my fan. I take it on trips with me.

  11. I love the sound of a fan at night. We don't run ours all the time but it's definitely one of the fringe benefits of summer weather. We all need magic flowers in our lives, don't we?

  12. My buddy watched Fried Green Tomatoes yesterday. Sounds like perhaps it's time for me to do a renew too. The other tomatoes, your dark cherry size ones, look yummy. I'd certainly want to eat one already, but have no idea how to tell if they're ripe.

    1. I find that every time I watch that movie or read the book there are parts I've forgotten which are really important. Definitely worth a second go-'round. Or more.
I'll just keep testing the tomatoes and finally, I know they will ripen.

  15. That magnolia is definitely magic. I can smell it from here. Truth is the bedroom photo is better because it’s real. The fan and the Tums tell your story. The veg and, oh yeah, fruit (tomatoes) are luscious looking. I would eat the shelled peas fresh out of the bowl and there’d be none for dinner. (Oh how I love your monkey lamp!)

    1. The shelled peas are so sweet it is almost a sin to cook them. But I did! And they were good.
I bought that monkey lamp so many years ago. I really fought myself over it. "Mary, you do not need a monkey lamp!" But I bought it and I'm so glad I did. Did you notice the baby monkey?
