Can You Hear Me Now?

I so wish I had taken a picture of Andrew, the audiologist who tested my hearing today. He was a hoot and made me feel comfortable immediately. I wasn't worried in the least about this appointment. I knew I had hearing loss and I also knew it was starting to really bother me. Forget family gatherings in restaurants. That's the worst case scenario. I also have a harder time hearing what some of my grandkids say than I'd like. And there's a woman in pottery class who is a very soft speaker and I have to ask her to repeat things. So I haven't really been fooling myself about the fact that it was time to get this situation checked out but I probably would have put it off forever if I hadn't made the promise to Mr. Moon that if he got his hearing checked, I'd do the same. I was rather shocked when he DID finally go and get tested. I think something must have triggered him to do that, perhaps while he was in Canada, but whatever the reason, I am so glad he did.
After his test, he showed me his results but they're rather hard to parse and he insisted that really, they weren't so bad.
I knew this was bullshit. This has been going on for years. But he stubbornly insisted that it wasn't necessary for him to get hearing aids and that he'd probably lose them if he did and, and, and...

So when I went into the little room at Costco with the glass door and Andrew began the process of testing me for all sorts of different hearing losses, I was more curious than anything. The exam didn't last very long but felt adequate to me although what do I know?
Not very much.
When it was over I told Andrew that it had not been the least enjoyable thing I've ever done. And it wasn't. It was pretty interesting, really.
And yes, I do indeed have losses and yes, I should get hearing aids and instead of being upset about that, I'm excited. I remember how much my world changed when I was in the third grade and got my first pair of glasses. Suddenly, I was able to see what I had never realized that I couldn't. I think everyone who gets glasses at an early age knows what this is like and almost all of us say the same thing- I could see the leaves on trees!
That was some pretty amazing shit right there. It literally changed my life and the way I saw the world. I still do not take this for granted.
So the thought of having a similar experience with my ears and hearing is sort of thrilling. I honestly don't give a shit if wearing hearing aids makes me look older. I AM older. I am at the appropriate age to wear them and as Andrew told me, virtually everyone over the age of forty has begun to lose their ability to hear what they once could. He told me that I'd hear more birds, that conversation would be so much easier, that I would not need closed captions while watching TV.
Now that doesn't bother me. I like closed captions. But hey! A new world! A world with more birdsong, more understanding of what my grandchildren are saying. A world where I don't have to keep asking what someone said when the family is gathered. A world where I'm not having to ask someone to repeat what they've said.
This all sounds (haha!) very, very good to me.

And perhaps the best news is that when I told Glen that yes, I needed hearing aids and that yes, I am ready to order them right away and was very excited about that, he was suddenly far more positive about doing the same. It's like he needed that one tiny push and I was there to give it with my whole heart and not in a way that implied he was being a stubborn old man who wouldn't listen to reason.
Although he is.
And I am a stubborn old woman who needed to stop and think about how much richer my life will be if I can hear better.

So today's experience may turn out to be a life-changer for both of us. I hope so. I really do.

I made a soup today with yesterday's broth and some of the leftover meat. It's also got all the vegetables that didn't get eaten from the veggie tray including broccolini. I picked turnip, mustard, and kale greens from the garden, chopped them up and added them to the pot along with onions, a lot of garlic, and some leftover green beans. The pot is so full I should probably make rice separately to spoon the soup over. I hope it's good. And...more for the freezer! The flautas last night were every bit as fine as I remember. Glen was so happy.

And tomorrow we may eat hamburgers.

Want to see a cute picture?

That is not just a random photo of eight adorable puppies. There is a story to it.
Of course.
Details to follow as the story unfolds.
And NO! I am not getting a dog. Not now, not ever.
But it looks like someone may be.
Love...Ms. Moon

  1. I am thrilled with my hearing aids. Life is so much easier, groups are fun again. I had to go the expensive route though, nonstandard ear canal size and shape, special order, also loss too severe for Costco remediation. But it's so good!
If Glen gets them I hope he wears them. Men are reluctant I've noticed.
Good for you for getting on the path!

    1. You, of course, were one of my inspirations. When you first got yours and reported how much better you could hear, my mind began to swing towards not only getting Glen to get his hearing tested, but for me to get mine tested as well. Thank you!

  2. I remember when my dad first got hearing aids when in his 60s. He kept rustling cellophane and rattling matchboxes with a silly grin on his face!
How wonderful to hear birdsong and grandchildren clearly again. And each other!!

    1. I think it will be marvelous to realize what I've been missing and to have done something about it.

  3. I don't think my hearing is too bad, but I do have the TV on rather loud these days. Hmm, perhaps you've inspired me to get a hearing test! My boyfriend definitely needs one; he spent his career at Boeing around machinery and I'm sure he has some hearing loss or he's ignoring some of my remarks to him. LOL

    1. Glen spent his life in an auto mechanics and tire shop and also on the basketball court. The noise level in both of those is high.
Me? Too many hours in front of a band most likely. "It's going to ruin your hearing!" they said and they were right.

  4. i do not have hearing loss (been tested recently) but have 3 friends who DO have loss that impacts their life...and they are all happy with their hearing aids- though I do hear (no pun) they take time to not only get used to wearing, but some need gentle adjustments by the hearing aid people before they perform to their best capabilities. I hope they help you both in the way you need them to! Kudos to you both and doing this simultaneously must be reassuring as well

    2. I know that getting them to function for us as well as they can is going to be a process. Glen and I will hopefully encourage each other to work our way through it.

  5. Good for you on getting tested and hearing aids. My brother in law has been hard of hearing his whole life, and has had hearing aids since childhood. Hearing loss is a major contributor to dementia, which makes me wonder why so many people, especially men, are ok with that.

    1. I often think that men may be the vainer sex. Not in all ways, of course. A large percentage of them don't wear make-up and could care less about what they're wearing BUT, they abhor anything that makes them appear to be less manly and virile and...old.

  6. Good for you to get your hearing checked and decided hearing aids are...OK. I hope Glen follows through, also. You'll appreciate hearing what your children and grandchildren are saying. You might consider taking them out when the Dumpster Fire is on TV. I should probably consider getting mine checked, too. When you hit my age...the wheels start flying off! My med cabinet looks like Walgreen's. I think my doctor is going to have an exam table named after me.
Oh, those puppies. I've in LOVE! I so miss my sweet rottweiler and my kitty. But no more pets.
I'm still dreaming of that pecan pie! Sweet dreams, indeed!

    1. Don't worry about me and the Dumpster Fire on TV- I would never watch him deliberately.
I know. When we reach a certain age, parts just start to show the wear and tear of the lives we've lived. Getting your hearing checked is a good thing, I believe. Even if you find you have impairments, you can always choose not to wear the hearing aids. And if you don't have impairments- hurray!
I have to tell you that both of those pecan pies are beyond delicious. I ate more of them than all of the desserts put together that I've eaten since last May. And it was worth it.

  7. Dennis gets everything from Cost Co. His aids sometimes work but most of the time- he thinks he is hearing but he is not. He gets confused and repeats what he "hears" and it is all wrong.
I did a test at Cost Co but my hearing is OK, I do not qualify yet. I tried aids just to see what they were like- OMG! I could hear WAY too much and it was painful! The cash registers sounded like they were banging out entire cities! OUCH! Not sure I would use Cost Co even though they are cheapeer. Dennis can'[t hear a damned thing except his phone, his aids are sinced into his phone so I do not have to hear him yell. hearing loss is such a hassle . Stella can]t hear either. Both Dennis and Stella accuse me of speaking to softly...Um, NO!

    2. Maybe Dennis needs to go back and get his adjusted? I don't know. I suppose they don't work for everyone. The audiologist told me that some hearing loss just doesn't respond well to them. Also- does Dennis wear them all the time?
My audiologist also said that if all of a sudden, everyone is mumbling, it's not them. It's you! I bet he's heard it all.
I love that picture so much. It has all the elements in it from nature that I love.

  8. Are those boxer pups? So adorable! I've been putting off getting my hearing tested too. I'm pretty sure I'll need hearing aids. In my mind, this is a "2026 issue" to be dealt with in the Spring once the snow is gone. Why snow is a factor, who knows? It just lets me drag my feet for another 6 months.

    1. Nope! Not boxers although they do look a bit like them.
I make the same sort of agreements with myself about things I don't want to do too. But getting your hearing checked is not unpleasant. Like I said, I found it very interesting.

  9. I did not know Costco did hearing tests.
A few friends have hearing aids, and they find them either too loud or they cause an echo sensation.
I have no experience with hearing loss, yet.
Getting a baseline hearing test is a good first step. Finding the best possible hearing aid will be important. There has to be something out there that works really well.
Those pups are adorable. Will one of them be joining your family?

    1. I think that if a hearing aid makes things too loud or if there's an echo going on, they may not be adjusted properly. But again- I have no idea.
One of those pups most likely will be joining the family but not the family of Mary and Glen.

  11. Good for you for being excited about getting hearing aids. It will make the world of difference to you (and to those around you who I'm sure get frustrated too)! In a similar vein, have you ever seen videos of people being gifted (and I can't remember the name of them) glasses that enable them to see colour for the first time? If you want a good cry check them out!

    1. No. I've never seen a video of that. I have seen videos of children who have had surgery to help them hear and those are amazing too.

  12. I am so pleased at your reaction to the hearing aids. So many people refuse and then miss and misinterpret what’s going on around them. And wonderful that you inspired Mr. Moon to reconsider. Hearing aids do change lives. When a see a truckload of puppies like that, I want them all.

    1. You know, if something is inevitable, and it's going to be a good thing in the long run, why not embrace it? I know it's going to improve my life and it will change Glen's. It'll probably change mine, too, actually.
Oh my goodness. Can you imagine owning all of those pups?

  13. Well, who could resist adopting one of those adorable puppies?! I'll take two. You can send them COD. :)

I'm glad you took the plunge on the hearing test and even more glad that your openness to hearing aids may help Mr. Moon feel comfortable with them too. It would be nice if they'd give you a pair to trial before committing to a purchase, but I guess that's not the way hearing aids work.

    1. Mine came with a 30-day money back trial, while the adjustments were happening. So yes, you can do that.

    2. Okay. I'll be boxing up two puppies and sending them via airmail to you. HINT: But a whole lot of food.
And yes, these hearing aids come with a thirty day money back trial too.

  14. Well done! Since we reached a certain age, we get these regular reminders to have hearing tests, we call them "the ear summons", from all corners, which makes it all very urgent and of course, we comply.
Are you sure this picture of puppies is not AI?

    1. "Ear summons". Ha! Our ears were telling us to hie thee to a hearing center.
I am very, very certain that picture is not AI.

  15. Yes indeed, good job on pursuing better hearing! Going back 25 years, I noticed people mumbling more, and that my desk phone at work needed a better headset. Or, a test revealed, I "just" needed hearing aids. I was lucky to find a wonderful audiologist and hearing aids were a major life improvement for many years, with regular adjustments and new devices as technology changed. Then lately my hearing started declining sharply and while I get plenty of volume I can't understand speech, everyone sounds like the adults in old Peanuts movies, or badly tuned radio. Next step is an implant and learning a new way of hearing digitally vs sound waves. Always something, eh?

Anyway, keep up the good work, wear your devices consistently and don't give up!

    Cheers,
    Ceci

    1. Gosh. You have been someone who has benefited from every better hearing technology there's been in 25 years! Or at least a lot of it. That's pretty cool, really.
I surely hope the implant works well for you.

  16. My hearing aids do not give me perfect hearing but they do give me much improved hearing. I especially like having them linked to the bluetooth on my cellphone so I can hear telephone conversations directly in my ears. So helpful! I can also adjust the volume from an app on my phone - making it louder (when I'm with a group of friends) or softer (when grandkids are noisy)!! ;)

  17. I know I have hearing loss. It's the same, bits of conversation are lost, having to ask people to repeat themselves, can't understand dialog on the tv, etc. My younger brother already had hearing aids. So I should do it, get my hearing checked.

    1. Why not, Ellen? No one is going to force you to get hearing aids if you decide you don't want them. I didn't realize that my hearing loss was as profound as it is. I mean, it's not TERRIBLE but it's time to deal with it.
