But you did! Watch your children and see what they want to do, what gives them joy, what drives them to learn more. And find a way to help them do that. In my opinion, at least, that was exactly right.jenny_ohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15475480579733466963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086296370004835655.post-64333646457732432962015-03-29T11:09:44.024-04:002015-03-29T11:09:44.024-04:00What a big question. It think Anne Patchett is right about borrowing all that money. Don't do it. It seems so crazy how the game changes. Lot's of people my age borrowed money for college. I thought it was the smartest decision EVER. And it was. Then the game changed. Now there'll be a whole generation in debt forever.
Well there. Love to you and all those you love this morning! Our youngest had other things to figure out, so we were patient and he starts university in the fall. My husband went to a tech school and got power engineer certification and has never been out of work. I took college classes a few years ago and that was insane.
Everyone is different.
Do what you love is definitely the best plan to have. Although planning is highly overrated.
Heartinhandhttp://www.heartinhand.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086296370004835655.post-51633199912678680442015-03-28T23:08:57.702-04:002015-03-28T23:08:57.702-04:00I think about these things all the time, as you kn...I think about these things all the time, as you know, particularly the school stuff. I am determined not to worry about it. Henry seems pretty set and determined to be on a more traditional path. Oliver, I imagine, will not do anything traditionally, and seeing him flourish as a homeschooled kid has opened my eyes to possibilities. I myself always wanted to be a writer and a mother and a teacher, and here I am doing all three which is something that I am perhaps not grateful enough about.
Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03313726816776097840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086296370004835655.post-475239303116021172015-03-28T23:03:17.399-04:002015-03-28T23:03:17.399-04:00I think you're right, it absolutely depends up...I think you're right, it absolutely depends upon the child. I know many brilliant people who do not have advanced degrees - they study on their own and think on their own and there is something high quality about that.

Of course there are a lot of crackpots who do that too, but there are also a lot of crackpots in higher ed, so there you go.

Maya Angelou didn't have a college degree, but about 30 honorary ones because she was brilliant and didn't need it - instead she went to a trade school and became a streetcar conductor and a mother at 17, and again, there you go. Mary Oliver never got a college degree either. You never know.

Me though, I need it. I'm thinking about going back for my ... is it now fourth degree? Damn I want to finish that PhD. It's just my nature, I like the schooling of it. Maybe it's that I'm not so bright and I need people encouraging me in certain directions with my reading and thinking. If I had lived 100 years ago and been denied education, I would have been very miserable. Just the way I am.
