I do believe the gumbo I made yesterday was the best I've ever made. It was so damn good that when I was tasting it before it was quite ready to eat, I thought it to be so delicious that I almost forgot to put the shrimp in which you only do at the last minute because shrimp just need a tiny bit of heat to cook. Otherwise, they become dry and stringy. As you can see, these shrimp look plump and luscious.
They were.
I am so glad that I made it last night and can share it with Mr. Moon tonight. I can definitely cook under the influence of a martini or two but it's a lovely treat to not have to worry about it.
And the bread turned out to be not so bad at all. A little dense, but not brick-like.
Glen is home and I am so glad. I can tell this is all wearing on him in a way I've never seen anything wear on him before. He just realized today that his hunting trip to Canada is coming up soon- the 14th of this month, so only twelve days away. Honestly, I've never been so glad to think about him leaving the country to go do whatever it is that those men do with guns and dogs while wearing camo. I want him to just be in a place where he has no responsibilities to fulfill. Where he can eat manly foods and make manly conversation, and, well... do manly things with other manly men who, I do believe, are all good guys. And since one of them is an ER doc, I feel just that tiny bit better.
I've had a fine day. I actually went to town for the tiniest bit of shopping. I didn't even get in touch with any of the kids because I left here after lunch time and wanted to slide in and slide out, incognito.
Well, not really. But you know what I mean.
The only sort of "fun" shopping I did was to stop by Oak Tree treasures where I bought a silk shirt and a cool basket and two nice napkins made of linen with one corner per each made of tatting. I plan on using the basket to try and organize some of my knitting and crocheting materials which at this point, are spread among several bags and small baskets with absolutely no sense of order.
That was my rationalization for buying it, anyway. And the price did not break the bank.
I had an unexpected exchange today via FB messenger with the daughter of one of my brothers. She is my only niece. I know I don't talk about my brothers much and the reason for that is because we are either estranged or mostly estranged from each other. I have talked about this before. I wish I could give you reasons for these estrangements and I do have a few thoughts on why one brother and I rarely talk, but as for the other two, I am honestly not sure what happened but it happened after Mother died and it involved the will and money, of course, as these things always do.
I believe the financial stuff becomes the fetid boil which began to grow and fester many, many years before when you are raised in a family as dysfunctional as ours was.
But I had not been in touch with this beautiful girl for many years and she's all grown up now and living in another state far away and I sent her a friend request on Facebook which she did answer with an acceptance.
That was a while ago but today, we actually began to communicate. She reached out to me and was very tentative at first which I quickly realized was due to the whole will/money thing and as I told her, I honestly wasn't sure what the entire problem had been and that we should have dealt with it right away but that somehow, Glen and I had deeply hurt both of my younger brothers, the boys I consider to have been my first babies. And I told her that whatever we had done, I know it had hurt my brothers terribly and for that I was so very sorry.
And by god, I am.
To think that we have been so out of touch for so long because of something I'm not even sure about but which I do not doubt caused great pain to my brothers.
But within a few message paragraphs, my niece and I seem to have come to an understanding, at least and my soul was so much more at rest. I told her that I had just thought about her yesterday, as a matter of fact, and how, when she was a little girl, she had sat at my kitchen island and looked around at all the colorful and funky and whimsical stuff I had hanging on the walls and on shelves and she sighed and said, "When I grow up, I want to have a house just like this."
I told my niece today that nothing either before or since has charmed me quite so much.
And then she told me that she'd read my blog post about that more than once and she still wants a house just like this one.
Oh my heart!
Oh my darling girl!
I think of the wasted time, thirteen years between my mother's death and now. Thirteen years of my niece and her brother, my nephew, growing up. Thirteen years of not being in close contact with her father, her mother, and the brother who is a year younger than her dad who has been completely incommunicado since that time.
This is some fucked-up shit.
(Niece- if you are reading this you obviously know by now that I curse frequently. I am your profane and blasphemous aunt.)
Here's a picture of my niece and my nephew when they came to spend the night here.
This has given me the motivation I need to call my brother, her daddy, to make a date to at least have lunch.
How incredibly twisted and ridiculously foolish and truly and horribly hurt and hurtful we humans can be. Bless our tender beating hearts.
Dear Niece- thank you.
Happy Friday, y'all.
Love...Aunt Mary, Ms. Moon

Families are hard. Failed communication, hurt feelings, old wounds reopened, you name it. I'm glad you two got back in touch. I just realized our moms died the same year, 2013. I was her primary caregiver and I didn't handle it well. I was stressed to the max and strangely enough, people aren't at their best when stressed.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about Glen's friend. In my opinion, they should leave him alone and let nature take it's course. It's what I would want anyway.
I'm also glad that Glen is coming up here to hunt. It will be good for him.
Families ARE hard. I don't know how to do it. I just know that love is always the answer and what form that love takes varies greatly. Self love can be part of that.
DeleteI felt guilty because I handled my mother's death a little too well. I remembered what a woman whom I considered to be pretty wise told me once about how I should work things out with my mother because the issues do not get resolved just because they die. I was so worried about that because we did not work our shit out. But guess what? The issues pretty much were resolved when she died.
Glen's friend's care is very supportive of life right now and I don't think anyone knows exactly what would happen if they cut off the air to his trach or quit sedating him. And then there's the g-tube. How can you quit giving him nourishment once that's in place? I really don't know but I do know Glen is certain that his wife is convinced she can take care of him.
I wonder if you might bring one of your kids along to lunch with your brother? Sort of a 3rd party to keep things serene? Plus they all seem so delightful it would be kind of a treat for him like your niece is for you?
ReplyDeleteFamily disfunction around estates scares me to death - I am the trustee for a parent's estate and I really don't want my siblings to feel like anything is being done in a way that disadvantages them. So I've been sending constant updates about what's happening which I now fear might come across as complaining.
Always something, eh?
Ceci
When my brother and I do meet, it seems fine to me. We stick to subjects which aren't that deep. We love each other.
DeleteMy mother made me the executor to her estate but I handed it over to my brother. It seemed like the kindest and most sensible thing to do. She'd left me nothing so I really had no stake in it anyway.
It's a heavy responsibility. I do not envy you.
Money does some awful things to families, when some have it and others want it and none are willing to compromise or even understand what the problem is. I hope peace can finally be made with at least one brother.
ReplyDeleteYes. I didn't really understand what the problem was. There was an issue that I did understand but I was willing to simply forget about it.
DeleteI think my brother who lives nearest and I do have some peace in our relationship. I know I feel that way.
Even without any money, literally, after my mother died the family flew apart. She was always the connection and without her, no connection. It happens after the keystone person is gone. Then people change the story as they go, and it gets so complicated.
ReplyDeleteYes. You are so right. It's not always about money at all and even when it seems to be about money, it may not really be at all. Your family showed that. I'm sorry you had to go through it.
DeleteMs.Moon,
ReplyDeleteI understand this, I think. You and your neice having such an exchange today is beautiful. I am happy for you. It’s healing. I hope everything good for your future communication with your brothers as well.
I, too, have recently taken my 16 year old neice to a My Chemical Romance Concert in another state. We’ve never spent more than an hour together one-on-one. Only at family gatherings. We realized we are like-minded. She’s not a conformist to my family and even though my brother and I are somewhat estranged (it’s complicated), he asked me to take her because nobody else could/would (honestly not sure). Even if nothing else comes out of it with family, my niece and I understand each other better after spending three days together talking.
Just got back from Canada myself. Glad for Mr. Moon getting away to do what he loves. Maurice is a hunting cat, sort of? He can’t bring her to help him?;-)
I appreciate your words. Thank you for sharing.
-Nicol
What a beautiful thing for you to take your niece to that concert! What an excellent opportunity for the two of you to bond, at least a little bit, and to find the things you have in common. I love that.
DeleteMaurice is a hunting cat but I don't think she be much good at retrieving ducks. Plus, she'd try to kill the dogs.
*niece
ReplyDelete-Nicol. :-)
It's a tricky word.
DeleteI'm glad you and your niece have reconnected, and I hope the rift with your brother can be mended.
ReplyDeleteWe never really HAD connected since she became an adult! So this was pretty huge.
DeleteGrief and money are symptoms I reckon. Unresolved issues of the past bubble up when parents die and the siblings are left holding the bag or bags full of resentments and unfair dealings. It is complicated and unexpected. So glad that you found your lovely niece , the photo of them as littles is precious indeed.
ReplyDeleteA very good day!
I agree. Grief and money are symptoms of the unresolved issues. And honestly- how often are issues truly resolved? It's like when people talk about "getting closure." As if that was even possible in most cases.
DeleteAnd no, I never would have expected my brothers and I to fall apart from each other so quickly.
My niece has grown into a beautiful young woman!
Keeping you and your brother in good thoughts. I hope that lunch is a positive experience.
ReplyDeleteFirst...to arrange it!
DeleteSo wonderful. I hope this opens to door to some healing for you and your brother. If not, you’ve reconnected with your niece and can again enjoy your sweet memories.
ReplyDeleteI’ve had no contact with my late-sister’s husband and daughter since shortly after my mother died. Inheritance issues (greed). Sad to say, in my case, it’s no loss and is a relief to have the constant dysfunction out of my life.
You know what? You're right. Just that exchange between us meant the world to me.
DeleteThe relief to have the constant dysfunction out of your life? That is exactly how I felt when my mother died. I have another brother whom I seriously doubt I will ever have a real relationship with.
How nice that your niece broke the ice. Maybe you and your brother can talk about why he felt so hurt. I didn't have much contact with my brother until my sister died. She was the one that tied us together. So I've been trying to change that. I reach out more and we talk more than just once a year like before.
ReplyDeleteGlen definitely needs that Canada vacation.
That's what we need to do, Ellen. Have that talk. I'm glad you and your brother are at least tentatively coming together a little more.
DeleteGlen needs that vacation so much. You're right. I'm really glad it was already planned.
Family dynamics are always complicated, even in the best of times. Add a death and an estate and fireworks are often likely. Estrangements happen a lot. I hope your meet-up with your niece goes well. This might open doors with your brother.
ReplyDeleteGM must be looking forward to hunting/fishing in Canada.
Susan
No. I'm not meeting up with my niece. Sorry if you got that impression. At least not at this time. She lives far, far away.
DeleteGlen is SO looking forward to that trip.
I'm glad that your niece reached out and hope it can lead to a bit of reconciliation with your brothers. My second son does not keep in touch with his siblings and I only see him if I visit him in northern Wisconsin as he won't drive here. I can keep in touch with him through texting but it certainly makes me sad and I really don't know why he feels this way. They all got along so well as children...
ReplyDeleteYou just never really know how or why these estrangements can happen. Kids who fought all the time when they were young can become the best of friends when they grow up and vice versa. I know it does make you sad.
DeleteI hope the lunch goes well. Families are complicated. I’m enchanted by August getting an ear pierced. Like Ellen, my mother wouldn’t allow it till I was 16., also that cover by the Killers is great! I’m gonna try and find a download. That gumbo looks like it was made from a perfect dark roux. Looks so tasty! Best of luck with your brother.
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
August got both ears pierced!
DeleteI was sixteen as well. The motivating factor for my mother letting me get my ears pierced was that I was being trusted to take care of my three younger brothers and the house while she and her husband went off on a pretty long trip. I mean- if I could do that, I could certainly get my damn ears pierced.
Yes. The roux was pretty dark. It takes so long to make a good roux but it is worth it.
Oh! And I'm so glad you liked that cover of A Pirate Looks At Forty. I found it so interesting. In some ways it's very true to Buffett's version but at the same time, more...serious? It is actually a very bittersweet song, isn't it? Many of Jimmy's songs were, even a lot of the ones that come off as all about lighthearted paeans to partying and surfing and, well, all that stuff. There's more depth to them if you care to listen.
DeleteI’m glad there seems to be a thaw of sorts in your family relationships. Wills and estates are enough to cause temporary insanity in anyone!
