According to this book, the Maharishi charged money for enlightenment because Americans only value things they pay for. Which is sort of true when you think about it. But hell- the amount of money that eventually flowed directly to him was obscene. All on the backs of these star-struck little believers. A lot of people ended up doing jail time. But not the Maharishi, of course. And there are still about 175 people living there from what I hear. I think the mindset has shifted to being more of a place for the aging. Which is pretty cool. I just don't like to be around people enough to ever fit into a place like that, as much as I might admire their philosophies. I've worn my share of Zen robes (though never outside the Zendo) and I always find people's embrace of religions fascinating, even if I inwardly think the religion is balderdash. I was appalled that they charged people to be initiated into the path of enlightenment. the poor guy was so eager to defend TM that he told my boyfriend and I that it was a 'donation' and we could still be initiated without paying so we showed up and there was some sort of confab and delay and I think he got in a little trouble but they did end up initiating us and we went to a couple of the meditation meetings but it really didn't stick. I did eventually pay the guy the full amount a little at a time because I felt sorry for him. fast forward about 4 years and my life was a mess, I was seriously unhappy, married to the boyfriend but on the verge of divorce and I ran into an old friend who was big into TM and he encouraged me to refresh my initiation and find peace. So I made the appointment, showed up, and the initiator (the same one as before) was an hour late and truth to tell, I think he had intended to blow me off. anyway, he asked me if I remembered my mantra which I did not though he had it written down in his little book. he told me that I would have to pay the fee (I have no idea if the money I had given previously ever made it to him and credited to me) to be re-initiated which was a big expense back then especially since I was the only one with a job, one of the reasons I wanted a divorce. Anyway, I walked out and that was the last time I was ever tempted by TM. ellen abbotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00535475792150335186noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2086296370004835655.post-30186961900573151812016-09-20T03:08:51.474-04:002016-09-20T03:08:51.474-04:00Well, your coping mechanisms were way better than ...Well, your coping mechanisms were way better than mine today.<br />I lived in a couple of communes and there was a time when I could have fallen for a guru but we never had any.
