Turn It Down, Man!

At pottery I got Ms. Fish on the rack of shelves where we put things to be fired. I managed to get it arranged so that it only cost me four tickets. Between that and my caladium, I now have two tickets left. There are ways to get more if I need them.
Lizzie wasn't in class because she's on her way to British Columbia to see one of her sons and his family. I am so incredibly lucky to have all my kids and grandkids living right here. But Lizzie loves to travel so it's all good. There were several other missing people in class so it felt different. No one was using a wheel. There was lots of glazing going on. There was chat. It was pleasant and we did laugh a lot.
And what could be better than that?
I really didn't know what I wanted to work on today but before I left home I picked five magnolia leaves and I am trying to make a dish out of the clay leaves I made, using the real ones as templates. I got the clay rolled out, cut the leaves, trimmed them up, smoothed them, drew in their veins, and tried to stick them together to make the dish I have in mind.
To stick two pieces of wet clay together, one uses a substance called "slip" which is nothing more than clay mixed with water. It's clay glue! You have to score the pieces of clay where you want them to be attached, spread on the slip, and give them a little squeeze. Then smooth them out again.
I'm pretty sure I'm one of the messiest slippers in the southeastern area of the US.
I don't think "slippers" is used like that but so what?
Now the hardest part of what I did today was to try and create the arrangement of the leaves so that they will not only be somewhat bowl-shaped after firing, but that the individual leaves will have some cup-like shapes of their own.
That was the idea.
What I ended up doing was to put the entire arrangement over a bowl mold and then I used crumpled newspaper to try and create the three dimensional shape of the leaves.
Jessie tried to help me by suggesting perfectly logical ways to do this and she absolutely has the mind to see what I don't which is how the dish is going to balance out in the end. I put three little knobs on the bottom of it which I am hoping will do the job. I am not seeking perfection here.
And thank goodness for that.

My brain just doesn't work that way. Jessie sees the parts that have the most clay and will be heavier, thus having the potential to make the dish tippy. And other things that could very well interfere with form and balance.
So the whole thing is an experiment and next week it will be dry enough for me to see how it worked. If it's not completely useless, I plan on making a crow to perch on the stems. Perhaps. Or somewhere on it. I have no idea how to make a crow and it may well end up being a crow-like thing. If it even looks like a bird, I'll be pretty happy.
I was telling Glen about this and he asked if the crow would look like a crow. I thought about that for a second and I said, "Well, it will definitely be black."
And no matter what I find next week, I did very much enjoy the process today. And of course it is all supposed to be a learning experience but I'm not sure if my ability to learn from my mistakes is very sharp at this point.
To be truthful, I'm not sure my ability to learn from my mistakes has ever been very well developed. It's just less so now.

Today's lunch out involved Lily and Lauren and Jessie. Yes, we all just ate together with August and Levon two days ago but so what? We went to the sports bar with surprisingly good food and I got my usual, the Asian chop salad with ahi tuna. I was determined to get something else but that salad is just so damn perfect.
A funny thing happened. Lily and Lauren were sitting on one side of the booth, Jessie and I on the other. She was sitting in the inside seat position, I was on the outside. Our server was a guy who could not have been more than twenty, if that. And he was friendly and helpful and attentive but my GOD! He was so loud. Like...his voice was booming. Every time he came to the table we all side-eyed each other. Finally, when we were almost finished, he came to ask if we needed to-go boxes or something but he began talking before he got to the table and he was so loud that I visibly flinched. It was a major flinch. It started out as an unconscious reaction but because I am who I am, I had to add a little drama to it.
The ladies at the table laughed and I said to the guy, "Simmer down, man!"
He had the grace to look a tiny bit abashed and said, "I often have this effect on people."
I wanted to say, "Honey, that is not mysterious. It is easily solved. Just lower the volume," but I did not. I think I'd played my old lady card just about enough.
And I left him a good tip so hopefully he'll realize that I wasn't mad. Just...overwhelmed.

So that was my day and I did not go to either Publix or Costco afterwards. I just came home. Mr. Moon caught me up on a situation he'd been trying to take care of for A. and his wife that needed taking care of. It had not gone smoothly.
Of course.
And he is not very happy about it. He'll figure it out though because that's who he is.
I think he's heading back to Gainesville tomorrow afternoon as A.'s wife has an appointment she cannot miss and I think Glen will stay Friday night too.
You know what really amazes me? The man does not moan or complain or talk about how difficult this is or how little sleep he gets in the ICU or anything like that. Not one damn thing.
I would be martyring all over the damn place. "Oh, look at me! Look at what I'm doing and going through for the sake of my friend!"
Nope. He just does it.
I really do not understand how he does it but do it, he does.

I'm going to go cook some scallops and pasta, a salad, and some more of my very, very special oatcake bread!

And yes- I am feeling better today and I thank all of you for listening to me whine and bitch, or as you Brits might say, whing and moan.
Same-same.
I doubt it will be the last time.
Y'all are precious.

  1. That ability to see ahead is very much the artist's mind. She really has it.
And the little lizard, whatever he is, is lovely. I think I'd make a clay one!

    1. Oh, Jessie definitely has it. I pretend that my subconscious knows what it's doing. And sometimes that is true. Just not in the engineering sort of way.
That is a gecko. You can tell from the toes. Those guys can literally walk on the ceiling. They sort of freak me out but I don't mind having them around. They feast on things like roaches.

  2. Lol. I actually saw the picture of Maurice and thought, 'OH nooooooo." Glad she is not dead.

  3. Glad to know Maurice is not dead. My Lola is dead, but I have been a bit unwell for a few days and each night I have felt her jumping onto my bed and kneading the covers by my shoulders just like she always used to. It was comforting and I thanked her.
I am very curious now about how the new dish will turn out, the underside looks good.
    Glen is an Angel.

    1. I am sorry you haven't been feeling well, River! Please take care of yourself. I'm glad Lola has come back to comfort you. If anyone could do it, it would be a beloved cat.
Glen is indeed an angel. But he's still human.

    2. Just one of those tummy bugs that streak through communities and cause havoc for a few days, I am better now, though still being careful with foods.

  4. (Belatedly) speaking of Gary Larson: you can find daily posts of his archived (and occasionally new!) cartoons at https://www.thefarside.com.

I am loving following your clay journey. Glad today was better and that Maurice is Not Dead.

    1. I believe I have an entire anthology around here somewhere of Larson's cartoons. I surely miss him in the paper.
      Yesterday was better. Thank you.

  5. As you well know, I’m more like you than Mr. Moon. What a guy. I’m excited to see the other side and the firing of your latest works. Uf, that waiter. Don’t have a cow, man!

    1. Haha! The best adjective I can think of to describe Server Dude's voice was truly "booming". He was a little spacey, too, but he really did try. I appreciated that.
Yes. You and I will never save the world, one person at a time, will we? Thank goodness there are people like Glen around who can take up the slack. But you. know what? You take care of your brother and have taken care of your brother his entire life. That ain't nothing, mister. You are a very good man.

    1. Well, as I always say, my husband is a very, very good man but trust me- he cannot walk on water. He is human. And sometimes he drives me insane. And not in the good way although sometimes he does that too.
I drive him crazy too but he still seems to love me.

  7. Glen is a gem, but I am sure you already know that. I am enjoying your pottery adventures. I am so unartistic that I think I would be a dud at doing anything pottery-like.

    1. Glen is indeed a gem and a very good man. But as I said above, he is absolutely as human as the rest of us. He's just a kinder human than many of us.
You never know, Michael- I have never considered myself to have a lick of artistic ability but pottery has shown me that I have...something creative in me in that area. I would have sworn that was not possible. You might want to try a class.

  8. I like so much how you have ideas to create in clay. The physics of clay possibilities will either begin to help, or you can just let others figure that part out. Just keep on creating!

    1. Yes! As long as I have Jessie to figure that part out I will be fine! Her brain works like her daddy's in that regard.

  9. A black crow-like thing shaped vaguely like a bird sounds PERFECT to me! And I'm glad Maurice is not dead, just napping.

    1. Ha-ha! Yes! I wish I'd brought my clay home to start playing with crow-like shapes that vaguely resemble birds.
Maurice was mostly just blissing out, I think, rolling on her back in the dirt.

  10. Maurice does look dead, glad she's not.
Loud people overwhelm me too and I end up getting irritable. Poor guy needs to lower his volume, especially if he wants to do well as a server.
I'm looking forward to seeing your leaf bowl. I find it so stressful trying new things because everything takes so long with clay, it's a big investment of time with clay to have it suck at the end but it's how we learn. I'm making a pill bottle holder right now, sigh. I'm that old:)
Glen needs to fill his own cup too. Sending hugs.

    1. He really did speak at a shocking volume.
I have grown so use to ending up with sucky looking things in pottery that I am not so very upset about it anymore. I just go on to the next thing. And if what I'm making doesn't resemble what anyone else is making, well- I have nothing to compare myself to so it's great!
I am trying so hard to do what I can to keep Glen from crashing and burning. His daddy used to have a saying which was, "I've done all I'm big enough to do."
And I think Glen knows that he can only do that much too.

  11. Did you remember to take a pillow to your pottery class? Your description of discomfort in your last post made me burst out laughing. 🤣 Right there with you.

    1. No! I forgot my damn pillow! For some reason though, my butt didn't hurt as much yesterday.

  12. Your new dish looks good. I like the curves of the leaves. Putting a small black crow on the stem will add whimsy. You are having fun at pottery and that's ideal.
Glen is perfect for attending important meetings with hospital/medical staff. Stern but reasonable is most important. Asking the right questions and securing answers is not always easy but it can be done. A. and his wife are lucky to have Glen in their corner.
Your server likely does not realize how his loud voice impacts other people. Maybe he got the hint that you provided.

    1. I do love the "let's see if this works" attitude I have now about pottery. It's not stressful, and mostly fun.
Glen says that the doctors and staff are very, very good about talking to him and trying to explain things to him. I honestly think they're still somewhat baffled. But yes, he is a good advocate.
I hope I helped that server. The funny thing was, was that my reaction was part spontaneous and unintended and part a little bit exaggerated.

  13. Sounds like you are enjoying pottery and I look forward to seeing how your things develop and turn out. I am lucky to wear hearing aids so I can turn the volume up or done as needed. ;)

    1. This was one of those situations though, where if I'd had my hearing aids in to help me hear the conversation at my table in a noisy room, they would only enhance the effects of the server's voice.

  14. you would have done everyone a favor addressing the volume of the young server- he would benefit from that. When we went ot the fish place when Erik was young and living at home- the server sounded just like Mickey. Mouse, We thought he was putting us on...he was not. BUT someone must have told him to get a new voice because when we went last time, still serving, the man sounded normal. I am sure his tips improved.
