This Life I Love

Those peppers are what I used to make a stuffed pepper casserole last night. I had no peppers big enough to stuff with rice and ground beef and tomatoes and onions and all those good things so I made up that combination, steamed the peppers you see there in a little water in one of my skillets, put those in the bottom of the baking dish and added the rice mixture on top. Then cheese. Then I baked it.
It was pretty awesome. My first real use of the clown peppers although I have used some of the bell peppers. Extremely tasty. I may make a pizza with those peppers on it soon. They are very mild but with a nice flavor.

So I've been thinking a lot about my birthday, which is tomorrow. I'm about to be seventy-two so today was my last day of being seventy-one which is a pretty obvious fact. I've been thinking, and even saying, that I'm seventy-two for quite awhile now so I don't think it's going to be a big shock. Some numbers of my life years feel more correct than others. Definitely true in the example of seventy-one/seventy two. Seventy-one didn't feel true. Seventy-two did. And now it will be. True, that is.

As I said to someone today, I am fairly amazed at the fact that I've reached what the Bible tells us is a person's lifespan- three score and ten, and then a little bit more. I never expected to live this long. And I am a bit surprised at how relatively healthy I am and how I really don't feel that old. I sort of simply feel like...myself.
(I just knocked wood.)
I don't LOOK like I used to and there is no doubt about that. But what seventy-two year old person looks like they did when they were decades younger? I don't care how much botox and fillers and surgery you get done, there is just no substitute for youth. Let us not kid ourselves. I don't even try. I absolutely know I feel so much better in my brain and my body after having lost weight even though I no longer have bosoms and my skin is so wrinkled that the grandchildren are fascinated by it which is pretty funny.

I spent some outside today, perhaps to prove to myself that I can still do it, that I can still work outside in this intolerable heat and humidity but what mainly motivated me was the fact that I could not stand what my little kitchen garden looked like. Probably no one but me would notice the difference but I did what I did for me and let's not kid ourselves.

It's still wild but the weeds have been a little bit tamed. And then because I'm insane, I did a more weed pulling/bed clearing by the side of the house.
By the time I quit I didn't even feel up to driving to the river.
Perhaps that's what I'll do tomorrow. Drive to the river. Sit in a chair under the cypress tree and read my new book.

We shall see.

Glen has been asking me for weeks what I want to do on my birthday and I've been saying, "This."
By which I mean living another day in this very life I live.
He and Jim, Tom's friend from St. Augustine, spent all day long going through hoarder shit in 108 degree heat and that's their plan for tomorrow too. They want to just get it done, get it over with.

I know without a doubt that if I had told Glen last week that I would really love to go to Paris or to Florence or, hell, to Las Vegas, he would have figured it out and taken me there. But that is not what I want.
Like I said, I just want more of this.

Looks like a thunderstorm is rolling in. Sounds and smells like that too. What a lovely birthday present that would be.

Love...Ms. Moon

  2. It's already tomorrow in Australia, so Happy Birthday!
All I want for my upcoming birthday is also more of this life, another 20 years please, so I can see my great grandchildren grow up. Currently one is 3 years, one is 4 months, and one is still "baking"

  3. Oh yes, I also love a thunderstorm. And the smell. That is a great gift.🎁 I hope you have the best birthday doing what you love, simple or extravagant. I like your viewpoint on wanting more of just what you have, while you’re looking at the one you love asking what you want for your birthday. That’s life.-Nicol

  5. Happy birthday! And I hear that about not feeling somehow old. When I was younger I used to think I'd feel a certain way when I got old, but l, like you, I just keep feeling like myself instead. That's fine.

  6. Happy birthday! I love your wish - another day of this very life. Thanks for continuing to share 'this very life' with us, as well. Especially if it includes reading your new book after a dip in the river.

  7. So many people who get botox and/or plastic surgery end up looking worse in the end than if they'd just left well alone. OK some have discreet surgery and it does look good (I'm thinking Sharon Stone) but if they think they're ever going to look 25 again they're deluding themselves. What saddens me is the 25 year olds who are already getting botox and fillers. Hell who thinks they need that at 25!!!!

  12. I want to come eat your stuffed pepper casserole. It sounds exactly like the kind of thing I love.

I hope your birthday is exactly as you wish--more of this. And maybe a birthday martini for good measure.

Your blog is a treat. I hope you know how many enjoy reading life as you see it.

  14. When I think of marking the years of our lives, the first 20 or so show real changes both physically and mentally. Then we settle down into adult lives, where we continue to change, but more slowly…except in bearing babies of course. All I’m saying is that the rate we’re marking with annual celebrations is slower. So maybe there’s a reason we gather more at the 5 or 10 year markers. Anyway, congratulations and may your 73rd trip around ole sol be another fabulous one! You’ve accomplished 72 already!

  17. I have tried, x2, to send along birthday greetings. Aaaargh! 70 years is a jolt, but in the end, if you can look around yourself and love the life you have created, well, that is success, to my thinking anyway..

  18. What a lovely post, Mary. Loving the life we have is a game changer for sure. I think I am more content than I have ever been even with worrying about my Dad constantly.
I wish you the happiest birthday ever. Here's to many more years of the same. Xx

  25. Happy birthday! Once the year turns I usually start thinking of myself as a year older even though my birthday isn't until the end of April. And after 76 of them, they are no big deal. The party was fun that my daughter gave me last year but not something that needs to happen every year. And yeah, at 76, I still just feel like me albeit a wrinkled version for sure. But I till get out and work in the yard even if not all day in the heat and I still create even if not on a daily basis. Life is just slower and less intense and that is just fine.

I may have to try your version of stuffed peppers.

  27. Happy birthday to you! It's pretty great when you know you're happy with what you have and you need nothing else. I've been thinking of myself as 60 for a while now even though I'm still 59. Maybe I'm trying to lessen the blow. LOL
