Lunching And Thrifting And Laughing And Crying And The Joy Of Jumpsuits

That picture is just to catch your interest. We'll get there in a moment. Meanwhile, check out the shoes.

Jessie and family are leaving on Saturday for their North Carolina summer. This is something I dread every year while at the same time, I cheer them on because the boys are so lucky to grow up knowing both the gators and manatees of Florida and the bears of North Carolina and the families who live in those places.
Also the love of those families.
And also, Vergil gets to go home. And if anyone in this world knows what that means and feels like, it's me and he deserves that and he deserves to be able to spend time with his North Carolina family. So all I can do is say that I love them, I will miss them, and I am thrilled they get this experience every year.

Which does not prevent me from weeping frequently when the time comes close to their departure.
So last night, knowing that Lily has Wednesdays off and Jessie is leaving soon, I suggested we go to lunch today and so we did. Lauren was able to come too before she had to go to work and it was a very good time. We talked about all the stuff, of course, and the food was pretty good and the iced tea was righteous and we were able to sit outside and it wasn't too hot. Can't ask for a whole lot more than that.

After lunch, Jessie and Lily and I decided to to to Goodwill. There's a large one about two blocks away from where we were eating and we stormed it.

If there's anything more fun than thrift store shopping with your girls, I don't know what it is. They hit the dresses first but I decided to peruse the glassware and kitchen stuff. I found a very lovely vintage tea pot with no lid but it had to be bought and it was not expensive at all.

Since I knew it was going to be used as a vase rather than a teapot, the lack of a lid was no problem for me. Here's what it looks like right now.

The magnolia tree continues to bloom. I've never seen this many flowers on it before.

That was all I got in the glassware section although this leaf platter sort of called to me.

It was made in Italy and I took its picture for pottery class ideas and returned it to its shelf, hoping that it will catch the eye of some other discriminating shopper.
Haha!

The girls found some good things. Some they bought, some they did not.
Here's a closer look at the shoes Jessie is wearing in that first picture.

Y'all- they were velvet.
Be still my heart.
No, she didn't buy them but aren't they sort of magical?

Lily found a jumpsuit in what we around here would call Publix Green. All of the Publix employees wear some version of a uniform which is this exact same color.

This is a little long but when she got it home, she tried it on with her pink platform Crocks and they were perfect.
She had to buy it, of course. We all agreed that it would be a fabulous look for the manager of the Publix liquor store. At the very least, she wants to go grocery shopping wearing it with her apron on. I think she should. I guarantee you that people would come up to her and ask what aisle the pickles are on.

Jessie too, found a jumpsuit. This one was one of those garments that you just know is somehow worth some money. Unique, very well made, and somewhat eccentric. She didn't even have time to try it on but Lily and I convinced her she needed to just go ahead and buy it.
So she did.
And when she tried it on at home, she sent us this picture.

She'll probably wear it for some sort of costume but I think it's adorable. And she looked up the brand online and a new version of that one minus the stars is like a hundred and eighty dollars so...
You cannot fake good construction.

And me? Well, besides the lidless teapot, I got a dress and a pair of shoes. While Jessie was looking at the dresses, I asked her to look out for something she thought I might like. And she brought me this.

Linen, pockets, my color.
Yeah.
She also pointed out these to me.

They're Dansko's which is a brand known for their craftsmanship and durability. Also comfort. Many people who work on their feet all day wear Dansko's including May. I would have bought these particular shoes at retail price and here they were, at a Goodwill price. Not much wear on them, very simple, comfortable as slippers, and a step up from even my best flip-flops.
You have no idea how much this thrills me.
Thanks, Jessie!
And thanks, Lily.
While we were walking back to our cars, we talked about how much fun we have together. How in our pictures taken when our family is all together, we're always smiling. How glad we are that we do not have the sort of family that makes you dread going to family events.
We don't just love each other.
We like each other. We are funny and we make each other laugh.

I did not laugh when I was telling Jessie good-bye. I was crying a little bit.
"This is so hard for me," I said.
"It's hard for me too," she said. We held on to each other for awhile. "Will I see you again before you leave?" I asked.
"Maybe," she said.
I needed to hear that maybe. It made today's parting a little easier.
And we'll be going up to see them in July. That's not so far away.

I feel that I should add that I did indeed close off all Maurice-access to my room last night and I had a better night's sleep than I've had in forever. When I got out of bed this morning, I barely had to pull up the sheet and quilt to make the bed. I don't think I moved all night long.
I believe I will try that again tonight.
Mr. Moon called from the dock on Lake Seminole a few minutes ago and he is a happy boy, back to work on his dream cabin. While we were talking, he caught a catfish which he sent back to its watery home. So all is well with him which brings me a sweet sense of peace.
And we made each other laugh.
Once again I must say- I am the most fortunate.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. Growing up, there was very little joy at our house. I can feel the love in your family. It radiates. It’s beautiful.

    1. I don't remember many instances of joy in my growing up family either. I think this makes the sweetness I see now all the better.

  2. I do love a good jumpsuit. Jessie left behind the ruby slippers! Your new ones are dance shoes.

    1. A good jumpsuit is a prize indeed!
The beautiful red velvet shoes were a wee bit too big for Ms. Jessie so she left them there.
      Sad.
I think I could definitely dance in my new shoes!

  3. You each came home with a purchase and that is true success.
    Great finds!
Dansko shoes are well made and very comfortable. I own a few pair, and they do not wear out.

    1. Yes. I have another pair of Danskos that I love. They, too, are a riff on Mary Janes.

  4. Oh my-Jessica Rabbit shoes! I would have had those in my bag just to put on the piano! WOW! You scored mightily -dress, shoes, pot. Great shopping skills! Jump suits are cute but going to the toilet is a challenge, having to undress just to pee.

    1. I doubt seriously that either girl is going to be wearing their jumpsuits much, if at all, in real life. Costumes, maybe.
They had another pair of velvet shoes and they were a sort of burgundy like you'd see in bark cloth. So rich.

  5. It looks like you ladies scored big time at Goodwill. I love those red shoes, Lily's jumpsuit, and your dress and shoes. I never find anything that nice at Goodwill.
You'll see Jessie and her family in no time, but it still makes you sad and that's ok.

    1. Yesterday was indeed a good day at the Goodwill. No doubt about it. Especially for me as I found things I will actually use a lot.

  6. There was a lot of laughing in my house, too. You guys really had the best time fooling with jumpsuits!

    1. I think more than half the fun at thrift stores is trying on outrageous clothing. I'll never forget once Jessie tried on a wedding dress and it was an eensy bit too tight for her which made the way she moved hysterical. My kids are mostly not afraid to clown. I'm glad your family had a lot of laughing.

    1. Me too, Nichol. I did not even know it was possible to have a family like the one I have now.

  8. I will confess, I think those shoes are ugly. Both pairs. But what do I know? I never wear anything but sneakers day to day and Ugg style ankle boots as slippers in winter. I have never been able to enthuse over shoes or dresses, though I am definitely female. I love the leaf platter and the teapot/vase is perfect with the magnolia blossoms in it.

    1. Boy, you don't mince words, River! And you know- we humans frequently have vastly different tastes. I do love pretty clothes even though I probably spend at least 85% of my time in men's cargo shorts these days. Or, if I'm gardening, my overalls. But I do like putting on a nice dress now and then. And I definitely know a lot of real females (and how would we define that?) are not interested in clothes or shoes at all.
That leaf platter was truly a pretty thing and I am so glad I found that tea pot.

    1. My kids are no strangers to the fun of finding treasure at thrift stores. It's great to shop them with someone so that you can share the lovely AND the horrible.

My youngest son and his family are in Rwanda for a month so I miss my 2 local grandsons right now. But the weeks fly by and they can video call me on WhatsApp which is new to me but can reach me from Rwanda!

    1. I am on WhatsApp but I really know nothing about how to use it. I know what I know and not much of anything else. I'm so glad that you can communicate via video from Rwanda using it. Sort of crazy, isn't it?

  11. Your teapot is actually a creamer in Blue Ridge Southern Pottery’s Evening Flower pattern, probably from the 1940s-50s. Margaret

    1. Well, if it's a creamer, it would only be suitable for a family of giants. It's much bigger than a creamer is and it also has what is obviously a place for a lid to fit into.
But yeah, I saw that same AI thing on google lens too. I am assuming that's where your information came from. You are completely correct about the maker and pattern.

    2. Not google lens. I recognized it as Blue Ridge and found a sugar and creamer set on Etsy. They must have made a teapot in that pattern too. M

    3. Or possibly a large gravy boat, family sized.

  12. Great thrifting finds! I love that pitcher and it's so YOU. I can just imagine all of you laughing about the craziness on the thrift store shelves.

I know it's a drag when Jessie and the family go away for the summer. Will you be going to NC at some point?

    1. We will be going to NC in July, I think. I need to get on the AirBnB search NOW. We're thinking that as much as we love that house we always stay in, it might be fun to stay somewhere else which is closer to Black Mountain.
I'm about to post the most hideous thing I found at the Goodwill today. When I saw it I thought, "Oh god. Steve would so appreciate this."

  13. Not a fan of jumpsuits. Since I don't wear a bra and not always a camisole, I don't care to get practically naked in a toilet stall just to pee. I'll have to check out the Goodwill in Rosenberg. My sister went there once and told me it wasn't worth going in. I don't know why I took her word for it since we had very different ideas about just about everything.

    1. I can see the rationale there about the jumpsuits. I seriously doubt either girl will be wearing them as any sort of everyday wear. More costume oriented.
Yeah- check out the Goodwill. You know how it goes. Not only do we all have different tastes but the merchandise in these stores changes up frequently.

  14. What a day! Sorry about the tears, but you are so lucky to love so much. I can’t believe Jessie didn’t buy those shoes (well, I can). They look so good on her and I suppose only make her around 6'4". I love your dress. You should have bought Jessie’s shoes! And those jumpsuits are perfection. Lily will make a splash at work!

  15. Love your vintage teapot. It is perfect for the magnolia blossoms. Fun and productive day at Goodwill. Daughter Deva and I did some thrift store shopping when last I was in Nevada City and we found a black cashmere coat for $20, which she let me take home. We use to share a camel colored Goodwill cashmere coat when she was a teenager that we both loved.
So glad to hear you will be making the journey to NC again this summer. Those times are precious! x0x0 N2
PS - Your leaf plate is looking fabulous. You are really getting into the pottery groove.
