Is There Such A Thing As Folk Pottery?

Pottery was fun today. The kind of fun where there was laughter and chat and more laughter. Some days we are quiet and everyone seems to turn inward to concentrate on what they're doing but some days seem more lighthearted and freer and today was one of those.

Chicken pot pie dish was out of the kiln and although it is no work of art, it sort of makes me smile. The yellow does come through but I think I have learned that for an outline of something, another color needs to be used or at least used along with it.
I rather like the braided rim.

I doubt I'll be making individual sized chicken pot pies anytime soon so perhaps it can become my scrambled egg serving dish.

Another piece had come out of the kiln but this one just from a first firing and it was a I have no idea what to do with these last forty-five minutes of class affair which the chicken dish was too, really. To be honest, I had forgotten I'd even made it.

This one may be binned. It is so obviously lacking a stem or some sort of ending and it probably isn't even worth glazing.
Live and learn.
Today I started a new flower bowl, this one hopefully to be a hibiscus.

I plan on adding something hopefully resembling the stigman, style (pollen tube), and anther which make up that cool center part of a hibiscus flower.

And of course I had to look that shit up.

I do not know how I managed to even live without google. You have no idea how often I am sent there to search something from YOUR blogs and also, in aid of writing mine. This would be very educational if I could remember a damn thing from one day to another.
I tried to use a photo I took of a hibiscus flower vase at an antique/vintage store a few months ago as an inspiration, a guideline.

And yes, I have posted that picture before.

Due to the fact that I have the kind of brain that if you sat me down with a pencil and a piece of paper and said, "Draw a bicycle," I would instantly feel as if I had never seen a bicycle in my entire life. I would draw two wheels and be completely flummoxed.
But that's okay. Many, many other people do indeed know how to draw a hibiscus and if I get help from their work, it's okay.
I mean- when people throw bowls or pots on the wheel, they are not inventing a new shape.
Is that a lousy comparison? You know what I mean.

But the thing I really enjoy really, really enjoy, is the way I find myself, in the process of making these flower bowls, and yes, the fish too, figuring out things as I go.
It seems almost magical to me as I have never, ever considered myself to be any good at all in the visual arts. And I'm not saying I am. I'm just saying that I am learning, with each and every piece I make, a little more about myself and what I can do.
This alone is worth the time and money. It feels as if I am exploring rooms in myself I never suspected were there.
Once again- thank you, Jessie.

So it was a good day in pottery and Jessie and I went to lunch because that's what we do. Lily couldn't come today because she was supposed to be getting color done on a tattoo she got a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the appointment had to be moved due to some glitch with delivery of needles but she said she got a nap instead and that is not a small thing.
But I am quite excited to see the end result of this tattoo which is based on illustrations from this book which I think is just about the most charming book ever printed, whether for children or adults or both.

All shall be revealed soon.

Enough, enough, enough. I am tired as I always am on Wednesday nights. I get up early and I never sleep well the night before. I'm always glad I did get up early but it comes back to bite me at the end of the day. I've made a giant pot of vegetable beef soup because for whatever reason I've been craving that. As I always say, it has ALL the vegetables in it and I will freeze a good portion of it to send up to The Camp next week.

The only problem with this soup is that it fills the pot to to the top, making it impossible to add the potatoes. I have two options here. I can either simply not put potatoes in, which is unthinkable, or I can take some of the soup out, put it into another pot, and add potatoes to both.
I will probably go with Option B.

Here's Glen's latest picture.

That was from last night. He has finished one bedroom upstairs and I am sure he started in on the other one today. I am a bit astonished at how beautifully these floors are turning out. I had no idea he had that talent too.

It's going to be an early night for me tonight.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. So good that the pottery classes are bringing creativity and reflection out of you in ways you never imagined. I look forward to seeing the hibiscus bowl when it has been glazed.

  2. I started pottery class again this morning and I made a pot for a plant, because all of my plants keep growing. One of my classmates bought some new rollers that leave an impression in the clay and I borrowed her hummingbird roller. Turned out nice.
I wouldn't be so quick to bin that piece with the leaves. Glaze it and see what you learn from it. You can always put it in the garden. I also really like your hibiscus flower.
Glen has done a beautiful job on that floor. Wow.

    1. I'm thinking I might take your advice and use the leaves as lesson in glazing.
There was a huge bin of free aprons at our pottery class yesterday. I'm sure they're ones that students have left in their cubbies and I got one with hummingbirds on it!

  3. I just now tried drawing a bicycle and have the wheels, handle bars and seat with no idea at all how the chain and pedals fit to it. I know the chain is attached to the back wheel and that is all I know.
Your chicken pot pie dish turned out lovely and the Hibiscus is off to a good start.
Glen's floor work is really nice. Is he going to top it off with clear sealant?

    1. I really don't know the answer to your question about the floor. I'll have to ask Glen. It looks to me as if the flooring material is already finished.
Well, you remember more about a bicycle when trying to draw one than I do.

That "cabin" is turning into a beauty! WOW I am so impressed. I held little hope for it when you purchase it. what a gem!

  5. Hey, I really like the leaves piece - maybe think about those really colorful purple and pink and chartreuse leaves, is that coleus? Should look it up.

And Jan Brett is a wonderful illustrator, one of my favorites (I admit I have a long list of favorite illustrators! What a terrific choice for a tattoo.

I think Lily's tattoo is going to be so fine. The artist really is doing a great job.

  6. Yes, that's what art making does -- it's a path into yourself. I'm glad you put clay into your life.

  7. Awww, don't chunk the little leaf dish, it's pretty! Could you maybe use it to hold a sponge by the sink? Or a bar of soap? Maybe a trinket dish to hold your rings/jewelry? I love it.
The soup looks scrumptious and those floors are gorgeous! You are both talented in your own unique ways.
Tell Lily we would love to see the tattoo when it's done. Naps are awesome.

    1. Oh, the leaf dish is much larger than I believe you are seeing it as. I should have added something for scale.
The soup was so good and just what I wanted. Glen is talented AND skilled. I am constantly amazed at all the things he can do.

  11. I LOVE the chicken dish and the hibiscus. I was so impressed you remembered all the parts of the flower from junior high science class. And, yes, of course there is folk pottery! There are museums, magazines, exhibits. You’ll be included one day. If I had a choice between a tattoo and I nap, I’d choose the nap. That upstairs bedroom is beautiful. That place will be unrecognizable.

    1. Haha! As you may know, I did do a Jr. High school science project on just that subject. I remember nothing about it except that my illustrations looked so childish. At least they could tell that no adult did it for me.
I'll never get a tattoo either, most likely. I figure if I don't have one by now, it'll never happen. But I love seeing good ones on others.
You're right about Glen's work on the house. He is really, really working hard.

  12. First to comment as your pottery friend. F-ing fantastic chicken! Whoohoo lady! Great braid rim too. The leaf dish might be an opportunity for glaze testing. To give you a chance to see what glazes you haven’t tried together…doing whatever. No loss but possible learning, no matter what happens. Just do have fun with it. Hibiscus is lovely design, but those lines you’ve made may well disappear as the clay shrinks…so if you can gently rub a bigger point into the ones you really like, that might give them more definition. Don’t worry about the little pieces that come out, as they can be brushed off gently when it’s dry - more easily than when the clay is totally damp. Now as to the cabin. WOW! What a lovely floor. I immediately thought how you’re going to add some colorful fabrics and that room will pop even more. I would have done the same with the soup. I also have terrible time sleeping when there’s an early demand with an alarm.

    1. Thank you, Barbara! I need all the information and observations I can get from someone who knows. I believe I'll take your advice on all of it. I have the leaf dish sitting out where I do my glaze painting and every time I go by it I think, "Hmmmm..." I'm sort of thinking of the colors of caladiums which come in marvelous colors and designs. You're right-why not? And thanks for the head's up on the lines in the hibiscus and also the information that it's okay not go get every tiny ball of clay that comes from that process. I was spending WAY too much time on that.
Not sure how much "decorating" I'll be doing in the upstairs bedrooms of the cabin. I'll probably never be going up there. But we'll see.
Sleep is hardest when you know you need it the most.

  13. Retired junior high science teacher here. Stigma, style, ovary - female parts of the flower. Anther, filament - male flower parts. The anther is where the pollen waits to be brushed up against, or blown away by the wind. Sorry to be obnoxious here - couldn't help myself. I do love your pottery! and your blog!

  19. I love someone's idea above to use the leaves as a test piece for colours. I am not a visual artist by any stretch of the imagination. Even when beauty is right in front of me I can make a photo look dumb so I don't even try doodling let alone drawing, painting or sculpting these days. Isn't it funny how we assume roles from the get go - my sister was the artist, I was the bookworm and my brother the physical one.

    1. Yes! Exactly. The artistic things I used to do when I was young got absolutely no response from anyone and so I figured there was no reason to continue. Of course, a real artist would not even consider setting aside their art. But I, too, was the bookworm.

  20. I love that chicken bowl and yes! There is such a thing as g as folk pottery. It is a subset of folk art and you are a folk artist, I think, a wonderful one! As, piece by piece you yourself are discovering, and I love this for you. Glen’s floor is exquisite. That room looks rather inviting now. He did that.

    1. If I ever WAS an artist of any sort, it would have to be of the folk variety. Of course there is also "outsider art." How can anyone even define outsider art of folk art? I don't get a lot of those distinctions.
Glen HAS done that. And I'd love to think he is doing it for me but honestly, I think he is creating HIS dream house. And more power to him!
