Cement Saw?

I love this picture. Jessie sent it last night after the birthday festivities. Look at those two boys. August even looks a little blissed out which is exactly what I feel like when I get a pedicure. Levon looks pretty happy too. I hear that Vergil liked getting his first pedicure all right and he even got color on his toenails, but he probably won't do it again. But I love him for supporting August on his birthday, showing him that yes, big strong daddies who are capable of doing ANYTHING get pedicures and nail polish too.

I love my family.

Here's a picture of the park party after the pedicure.

It's been a pretty good day here in Lloyd for me. The FKS has taken a day off and I've felt fine. Beside the eternal hours I spent trying to find a different book to listen to, I've spent most of it outside, playing in the dirt. This really is about my favorite thing to do these days. I thinned some mustard green babies and I picked beans and I pulled roots out of a row that Mr. Moon had made for me but not gotten around to clearing yet. I'm not sure what in hell these roots are but they seem to be a new thing and they are tough and they go on forever. And pretty big, too! I mean, you could build a fire with them and toast marshmallows on it.
After I cleared that row, I planted some more mesclun mix seeds because the ones I've planted in the growing bags don't seem to be overly enthusiastic although honestly, they are sprouting. At least some of the varieties in there. Then I turned the sprinklers on which made the birds so happy. They were dancing in the water when I went to turn it off and that was a joy to see.

So you know how I keep saying the marigolds could burn your eyeballs out with their color? I swear. This is the truth. The camera does not capture their brilliance but I tried.

Look! The carrots are sprouting their tiny hair-like sprouts.

In real life, those sprouts are almost microscopic so the iPhone camera does better at extreme close-ups than it does at eye-blasting color.

After I finished up there, I dragged the garden cart and the old rusted-out canning kettle I use to throw weeds in, my trowel, my gloves, and my clippers to the area in front of the fence which abuts the sidewalk and began pulling some of the horrible, horrible crocosmia there. Most of them are dead-looking and brown and it's all just a messy nightmare. I posted a picture of how it looks recently but I'm too lazy to either go back and find it or go outside and take another picture. Who cares? Trust me. It's hideous.
But of course I get such satisfaction from pulling those things out of the dirt and trying to find all their bulbs which is impossible but I do my best. As I worked, I was listening to the audio book I got a few days ago, the NYT's recommended What We Can Know by Ian McEwan and which I had pretty much hated until I got about five hours in and it's hooked me. So yes, that's a long time to read or listen to a book before it really gets your attention and interest but what the hell? At least it has. And I didn't find another book I wanted to listen to anyway, despite the ridiculous amount of time I spent looking this morning.

I also got the porch plants watered and that always makes me happy because it makes them happy. So it's been a good day all around.

Mr. Moon has left for the lake house. He said that he is going to start working on the downstairs shower and he needs to cut some cement.
Excuse me?
"I bet that makes a lot of noise," I said.
Turns out cement saws are a thing. I guess he must have one because he said he needed to get a cement saw blade. I have absolutely NO idea what all he has in that garage of his. I only go out there to get fish or venison out of the freezer. And I try not to really look at anything else because it's overwhelming to me.

I've thawed some tuna that I got at Costco a few months ago and froze, to make myself a sort of tuna poke bowl salad. I'm not bothering with the bowl but will probably just use a plate.

Pottery tomorrow and I feel like I haven't been in months, rather than two weeks. I'll finally get to glaze my flower bowl. I hope.

I guess the government's about to shut down. This just seems impossible to me but at the same time, my impossible gauge has broken so nothing that comes out of Washington really seems beyond the realm of possibility. I'd say "unthinkable" but they managed to blast right through that one about nine months ago.
Okay. I can't talk about this.

Staying busy! Yes indeed I am.

Love...Ms. Moon

  1. I have patiently waited for an audio book from the library, only to find that I hate the voice of the narrator. Who happens to be the author. This has happened to me before when another person reads. I always wonder do they have to audition? And this person won the contest?
I have never had a pedicure. I am so ticklish I would make a fool of myself. But I love that those boys were good sports. They are going to be good husbands.

    1. An annoying narrator can definitely ruin a book. And yes, I think they do have to audition. It's an acting job. I have had the experience of very much disliking a narrator only to find that soon enough, I see why he or she got the part. Not always though.
I am ticklish too but there is only a minute or so during the pedicure when that is an issue.

  2. love the boys/men pedicure! Good for them! And.....your lovely flower bowl may be glazed tomorrow, which I have been waiting for! Glad your FKS has subsided today. And yes, unthinkable is what I feel each time I rarely access the state of things these days. Yes, unthinkable, yet present, sadly

    1. Although I try not to obsess about the news I do feel that I need to know the basics of what's going on. I guess I think that this way I won't be taken unawares but of course that's not true.

  3. Is it my imagination, or does August look like Mr. Moon? Pedicures are complete joy. For sure.

I give up on books if they don't intrigue me within a few chapters. I tried reading, 'Wild Dark Shore,' a few weeks ago and gave up. I might give it another go because I WANT to love it. (I was distracted when I was trying to read it.) It's cool when a book finally catches. Birds are a lift of spirit and who wouldn't smile at their appreciation of earth and water, unless they are the...? The government-fuck it all. Birds are perfect, like Maurice. -Nicol

    1. Of all the grandkids, August definitely favors Glen the most, especially his body. Glen was a very skinny boy who suddenly shot up fast in his early teens which made him appear to be even skinnier. We shall see if that happens to August.
Funny. I had a dream the other night where I was seeing hummingbirds. Quite a few of them, and they were bright blue with yellow faces, and had long, long tails like a Dr. Seuss bird and yet, they were definitely dream hummingbirds.

  4. Kudos to Vergil for getting toenail polish in support of August. That's a REAL dad.
Can you do a tofu poke bowl? Being a vegetarian, I'm always looking for things to add and that came to mind.
Are there any updates (photo's) on the pier with a house coming soon?
In all your gardening years, did you ever run across a snake? Sweet Jesus! I would always be fearful of that process of sticking my hands in weeds/plants and not know what's 'in there'. I know gardening can be so therapeutic...but...finding a snake might finish me off.

    1. You can do any kind of poke bowl you want! There are no poke bowl police! I'm sure there are tons of recipes online for them. And you can use any recipe you want and substitute tofu for tuna and add beans (edamames are great).
The latest thing Glen's done on the lake house is beginning to pain over the nasty, ugly, hideous wall paper in the hallway and kitchen. Whoo-hoo!
Hmmm. Trying to think about the snake thing. I don't think I've ever run into one while gardening. So I'm not worried about it. What did use to freak me out was finding a snake in one of the chicken's nests in the process of swallowing an entire egg. That is pretty weird.

  5. Pedicures and pizza parties sound good to me. August looks pretty happy with his special day.
The amount of work you accomplish in your garden is impressive. I find any work done in the garden shows immediately and that is rewarding...big time.
Pottery should be fun tomorrow. I look forward to seeing the finished flower bowl.

    1. Eh, I am always so far behind in what I should be doing either in my garden or in the yard or both. Always.
Pottery was fun today although I didn't get finished painting glaze on my bowl.

  6. Glad August had a good birthday and glad you got to work in the garden.
It was actually kind of cold today and poor Jack has a fever now. We're supposed to leave for BC on Thursday. I guess we'll see what happens.
Oh, and the teachers are going on strike next Monday.

    1. Oh god. Jack has a fever AND there's a teacher's strike? Bless you. I hope he feels good enough tomorrow to go to BC.
I bet your "kind of cold" is what we'd call frigid.

  8. Five hours? I'd give up after one if it wasn't interesting. Pulling the crocosmia is what causes all the little bulbs to fall off the roots, ideally (which won't happen) is to dig down to about a spade depth (I read this somewhere)and remove plants and soil together, dump them in a giant sieve and shake all the dirt back into the garden bed while keeping the plants and bulbs in the sieve to be thrown away or burned to be sure they don't re-grow. It's a lot more work I think and really only necessary if you are clearing land to plant edible stuff.
I love the boys all getting pedicures! And the party photo looks great too.

  9. Is it a " thing" there to have a pedicure on your birthday? I once went to one of those places where they had fish that nibble the dead skin on your feet! It tickled! Happy Birthday August.

  10. I went for a mani/pedi on Friday and am going back for a facial this Friday. I've started going to a local lady (again, putting money into small local businesses rather than larger franchises). Thinking about adding a full body massage into the mix every month too. Oh the bliss! And thanks for the book recommendation. I don't know if I have the patience to endure five hours before beginning to enjoy a book (and I'm disappointed with quite a few Audible books) but at least it's good to have something to listen to while I'm walking!

  11. Of course Mr. Moon has a cement saw. Just think of Norm from This Old House. He would have been an inspiration if he hadn’t had a million dollars worth of equipment. Mr. Moon is better than Norm. Great post pedicure park party picture. Perfect when followed by a poke plate. I have never had a pedicure. One of these days.

  12. Well, I would say that EVERYONE loves your family! Watching the grandchildren grow up before our very screens has been the highlight of my day! Ten years old already- zip- there goes time!
Maggie's double digit birthday- on into the teens , will be wild! She will be doing the teen years a justice!
BTW, I do love your style, your dresses, the blue is my favorite color.

  13. I've never had a pedicure or a manicure in my whole life. But I can see that August and Levon are surely enjoying theirs!
I can't believe how much work you and Ellen can get done in your big yards. You certainly put me to shame. Glad you are feeling better.

  14. Those boys and Virgil. Jessie got her a good one with Virgil.

I still have not readied my garden area for planting or finished weeding the far back flower bed. Must do that soon.

the last three books I checked out have not grabbed me. I got halfway through one and just didn't care. Tried another, got 53 pages in and really did not care (the writing style was tedious). Third book in a row I'm halfway through and trying to decide if I want to finish it. Is it me or do authors not know how to write an engaging story anymore.

  15. Recently discovered books being read on a Toronto Radio Station 96.3 The gal reads them with different voices for each character. Like not having to venture out of the quilt studio.
